O. McKellar, Mrs Gerald Ferguson, Mrs R. W. S. Dotting and Mrs Garth Gallaway. * * ¥ Misses Stephanie and Ngaire Armstrong. of “ Mount Vernon,” Akaroa, have arrived in Dunedin to commence their training as nurses in the Dunedin Hospital.
A small birthday celebration was held at “ Beech Cottage,” the home of Mr and Mrs Guy Tapley, on Saturday evening in honour of Miss Jocelyn Tapley. whose friends were welcomed by her, wearing a pretty pleated frock of aloha-pink crepe. ¥ ¥ ¥ News has been received from abroad that Danielle Darrieux, the beautiful French film star, was caught in France by the German invasion. There has been no further news of her. Several of her pictures have been shown in New Zealand. ¥ ¥ ¥ Prior to the Commerce Ball on Friday evening a dinner party was held at the Carlton Hotel. Those present were Misses Elespie Forsyth, Betty Elvidge, Josephine Russell, Nancy Tamblym Marie McCalljon and Messrs D, Eels, W. Meek, D. Paterson. P. MacAvoy and T. Friedlander. V Members' attention is drawn to the fact that the Travel Club will meet tomorrow morning in the Tudor Hall. Savoy. The speaker will be Mrs Beauchamp Barclay, who recently arrived in Dunedin after having been evacuated from Hongkong. Hostesses for the occasion are Mesdames J. A. Jenkins and Ivo Carr. « * * The Pine Hill branch • of the Home Economics Association held its monthly meeting on Wednesday last at the home of Mrs Chipp. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs A. J. Fox, of North Dunedin, who gave a helpful talk and demonstration on the correct ■ method of making and applying the various kinds of poultices and hot ■ fomentations. , Mrs McNeill, retiring president, thanked the speaker. ¥ ¥ * An enjoyable programme was presented at Reynolds’ Free Kindergarten on Wednesday last, when a concert tea was held in aid of Kindergarten funds. Vocal solos were contributed by Mesdames Barnett, Longworth. Ballantyne, Miss Pile, and Miss Elsie Kirkham; elocutionary items by Miss Margaret McLay and Miss Kirkham. a 'cello solo by Miss Dorothy Rush, and a violin solo by Mrs Ballantyne. The accompaniments were played, by Mrs Walmsley. The programme concluded with a short sketch by Mrs Cowie and Miss McLay, after which tea was served by members of the committee. ¥ ¥ ¥ The annual World Fellowship Bazaar will be held in the Y.W.C.A. Hall on Thursday next. The funds raised by the bazaar is Dunedin’s contribution to the Y.W.C.A. of China. Miss A. M. Moncrieff being the representative of the New Zealand Association. The committees responsible for the stalls have been working for this effort for some weeks and have collected a goodly supply of articles for sale. Although the official opening will be at 3 0.m.. the stalls will be prepared to sell their wares from 11 a.m. All members and friends of the association are invited to attend and show their practical sympathy with the object. ¥ ¥ ¥ Mrs Ewing acted as hostess at an enjoyable afternoon party held recently at Mrs Ewing’s residence at Five Forks. The “ Six Harmony Sisters,” who sang at the recent concert, gave the party in honour of Mrs Ellis, who had trained them and who had undertaken to make all the paper frocks as well as play the piano for their items. After a delicious afternoon tea provided by the hostess. Miss McCutcheon, on behalf of the “ Sisters," made a presentation to Mrs Ellis, who suitably replied. Among those present were:—Mesdames Ewing, Ellis, McLean and Rutherford. Misses F. McCutcheon, T, Ewing N. Ellis. E. Ludemann, A. Muldrew and B. Kingan (Harmony Sisters), Misses D. McLean, J. The Savoy lounge, prettily decorated with spring flowers, was the scene on Saturday night of an after-theatre party, given by the committee of the Dunedin Repertory Society in honour of the cast of “Quiet Wedding," and all those who had helped in the production. The president, Mrs Richard Hudson, who. receiving the guests, wore a smart ensemble of black lace and a spray of flowers, congratulated the cast on its meritorious work. She was assisted as hostess by Mrs Wakefield Holmes, who wore a distinctive gown of rose and silver lame. Presentations were made to the producer (Miss Bessie Thomson) and the wardrobe mistress (Mrs Dora Smeaton) on behalf of the cast. Those present took the opportunity of exchanging farewells with three members. Messrs Philip Nevill, Max Wilson and Peter Young, who were about to leave for camp. ¥ ¥ ¥ The meeting of the Stirling branch of the League of Mothers was held on Wednesday last. Mrs Coatsworth presiding. Mrs Richardson read the 98th Psalm. Mrs C. Andcrton. temporarily acting as secretary, moved that a minute of appreciation be sent to Mrs J. P. Boyd for excellent work rendered to the branch. Several members joined with the Balclulha branch in meeting to welcome Mrs English, the new Dominion president. The election of office-bearers resulted: President. Mrs Coatsworth; secretary, Mrs Walls; vice-presidents. Mesdames C. Reed and R. Knox; committee —Mesdames Whiteford, Inglis, J. G. Weir, G. Perkins, and J. Logie. Mr Mortley Peake, headmaster of Stirling School, gave a fine address on “ Schubert.” and sang four of the composer's best songs. Appreciative thanks were expressed by Mrs Wall. The monthly thought was: “ Our lives are songs—God writes the words; We set them to music at leisure. And the song grows glad or sweet or sad As we choose to fashion the measure."
