TREMENDOUS LOSSES
GERMAN PUBLIC SHOCKED CAMPAIGN TO BUILD MORALE LONDON, May 31. German press and radio stories about the alleged maltreatment and even murder of German prisoners are at tributed by several neutral sources to the shock and horror with which, it is said, the German public is receiving the first news of tremendous losses of men in Belgium and France. The campaign of hatred, it is statea. is designed to sustain morale and offset suspicion that man-power is being recklessly used as “ cannon fodder " This has become all the more necessary. as casualties continue at an increasing rate. • It is impossible to keep from the public the fact that hospitals throughout Germany are filled to overflowing and that hundreds more are being improvised in schools and public buildings—so hurriedly that obviously requirements had been hopelessly Underestimated. Exhibitions have been organised throughout Austria to reveal Britain’s “ sins.” One propaganda device in Austria is to dcnict rosy pictures of victory, the theme being that it is well worth bearing losses for the sake of future generations.
