WOMEN AT FRONT
AMBULANCES BOMBED ARROGANT YOUNG GERMANS LONDON, June 10. Mrs Hampton, wife of a naval officer, and Miss Muir, a Scotswoman, drove ambulances from the Somme front on Sunday. “We had a hectic time driving wounded, including Germans, to hospital.” they said in an terview.“German bombers show particular delight in ‘strafing’ ambulances. We wore bombed and machine-gunned su often that we tired of throwing ourselves into ditches and then scraping off the dirt and mud.” Miss Muir said: " Most cf the Germans we handled were youngsters, aged from about 20 to 22 years. They were arrogant and would hardly accept the water, we offered. They declared that they had evidence that our methods of warfare were equally as ruthless'as theirs.” The women said that dead littered the roads along which the Germans were advancing. The crews of German tanks suffered terribly in the terrific heal, combined with cil-stench, •in the airless interiors of the tanks.
