WHAT WOMEN CAN DO

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—While endorsing all that “ Mary ” says, “ Isabel ” shows her desire to help and is to be admired for her sentiments, but as she points out. women do not know where to begin or how. As a sister of such gallant women as “ Mary ” and “ Isabel ’ may I point out that awaiting leadership, hoping and suggesting is of little or no use in this distressing period of war. Only action can and will relieve those needing our help. “Mary” and “ Isabel ” can only give their offerings, therefore, by organising those of a similar mind and then, with united force, approaching the Government determined to have their desires put into force, and I am sure volunteers will be plentiful. “ Isabel ” points out how much less we need than we have and mentions bus fares, clothes, delicacies, etc. Certainly if we forgo these things (of which I think few mothers have little) we can help a little, but how much more could ,we help by making an effort tc produce more, by working longer hours and still enjoying a small amount- cf the luxuries with which this country is so plentifully endowed! Our effort to help would have a much richer and brighter result if i! we made our motto those splendid words of that clearsighted group belonging to the Douglas Credit Movement. “ Not less for a few, but more for all.” With that in mind if we produce more and if all workers give systematically by organised methods of longer hours a sure way of help is provided in which we give our best.—l am, etc.. Kathleen. Caversham, June 24.
