'■WILLIS BEATS CALTAUX <• (Per United Press Association) BLENHEIM, June 17. Merv Willis, former Queensland light-weight champion, defeated Vic Caltaux, New Zealand welter-weight champion, on points in a non-champion-ship contest of 12 rounds. Willis (lOst 91b): was a pound heavier than his opponent. The bout was fast and exciting, Willis winning by his superior science, especially on defence. Willis scored a knock down in the fifth round and was himself down in the tenth., OTAGO ASSOCIATION t INFORMAL EVENING An .exhibition of for instructional ‘purposes was given by the Otago Boxing Association on Saturday night. About 18 bouts ■.were staged, and the majority of'the boys who took part were novices. The evening was arranged to give the boys an opportunity of sparring with members of other schools before a crowd and with a referee In the ring. By this means it was hoped to overcome the nervousness that boys feel when fighting in public for the first time. The following boys took part;—Messrs Larkins, Crawshaw. Anderson, Barnett, Kerr, tDelargy. Holmes, Glover, Jack, Ferguson, Salmon, Leckie, Reidy, Scott, Lowe Stevens. Wendleken, Morrison, Mooa’re, Todd, Donaldson, Ikin, Sharkey. Crawford. Glover. Butler. Chalmers, and Thomson. L. Greaney. the professional feather-weight champion of New Zealand, gave an exhibition of four rounds. There willing bouts were also staged by the pupils of the Christian Brothers’ School.
