THE WAR BURDEN
TO THE EDITOR Sir—Mr C. M. Moss agrees that standards of living cannot be maintained unless the active members of the community increase the volume of production. I think he will agree that such increase is improbable. The question, he asks is, “Whose standards are to be reduced?’’—The answer is that everybody’s standard must come dpwn, Mr Moss says that reduction should apply only to those who live on unearned incomes, but I fear that this is impossible, and I am sure that it is undesirable. The vast majority who live on what are called unearned incomes are pensioners, superannuitants, and people who receive social security payments. A large number live on the interest and dividends earned on the savings of a lifetime. The shareholders in companies ai-e the largest employers of labour. I agree that everyone who can be should be usefully employed, but I cannot agree that Mr Moss and I. who can live on what we can earn, should be exempted from making any sacrifice.—l am. etc..
