PURCHASE OF SUPPLIES DIFFICULTIES EXPERIENCED SHORTAGE OF AEROPLANE ENGINES : NEW YORK, June 15. (Received June 16, at 9 p.m.) The French Purchasing Mission revealed that it has taken up an option for 120 “ flying fortresses,” which will be built by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation, for delivery in the second and third quarters of 1941. The British and French Purchasing Mission announced that the Government had released to the Allies new supplies of powder and ordnance material.!' It added that . while the quantities were comparatively small, they were “very acceptable indeed.” A representative of the Mission paid the Allies could use 5000 aeroplane engines immediately, but were unable to obtain them-, although an ample supply of frames was available. United Stales shippers are conferring in Washington with . officials on the possibility of overcoming the neutrality restrictions and enabling ihe use -f American ships to supply the Allies. The Secretary of War (Mr Harry H. Woodring) has announced plans to train 10,600 airmen annually, 'including 7000 pilots. THE FIFTH COLUMN AMERICAN ARMY PENALTIES WASHINGTON. June 15. (Received June 16, at 9.30 p.m.) The Senate passed a measure aimed at Fifth Column activities in the army and navy, A maximum of 10 years imprisonment is provided for advocacy of insubordination disloyalty or mutiny. . The Senate also voted m favour of a fingerprint register of aliens. ENTRY OF ALIENS STRICTER CONTROL PLANNED WASHINGTON Juno 15 (Received June 16, at 7 p.m.) The Attorney-general (Mr Jackson) announced a new policy of strictei’ control of the dntry of aliens. The United States would no longer admit all persons up to the quota limits to whom no objection was raised Henceforth it must “affirmatively appear that the admission will be in the American interest." , . , . He urged the immigration, labour and naturalisation services, which today were transferred to the Department of Justice, to do their utmost to prevent aliens becoming willing recruits of the Fifth .Column.
