He sailed from Australia with the 26th Battalion to Gallipoli, and in his own words lie knew “More than four vears of war before he was a man." He was one of the youngest Australians to land with that legion of youth upon the beach at Anzac Cove. He stormed into action with the other ,men and fought daily alongside them 'until a bullet through the knee brought him down at Lone Pine. Invalided to St. John’s Hospital, Valetta, Malta, he entered it suffering not only from the effects of war wounds, but also with enteric fever, which had developed on the hospital ship, and which he had apparently contracted in the trendies. The boy’s fight for life was desperate. His weight dropped to four- stone before the fever finally left him and he had recovered sufficiently to be placed on the ship for England. Buried Three Times. The call for men was so insistent that as soon as Rouse had sufficiently recovered strength lie was once more in the front line in France. Here he went through a series of experiences which prove once more that truth is stranger than fiction. Three times Rouse was actually buried alive. Each time by sheer tenacity and determination he was able to force his way from the entombing earth. At Bullecourt his wrist was terribly slashed and pierced through from one side to another by a German bayonet. Once again Rouse was invalided away from the front line, this time being sent to Guy’s Hospital, London. Surgeons insisted that his arm be amputated, but Rouse refused, retorting: “I came into the world with two arms, and I’m going out with two." Careful medical attention and nursing saved his arm and his life. Again Rouse was passed as fit for active service. He went back into the line—two of his brothers were killed —and misfortune caught up with Rouse himself at Bellevue Farm, near Albert. Three Ribs Shattered. A bomb from a Taube burst near him and three of his ribs were positively shattered by flying debris. Rouse knew no more until hours later he Even the tough spirit of this young Australian found this series of happenings too much, and when at the conclusion of hostilities, Rouse was brought back to Australia he was no more than a burned-out wreck of his former self. Admitted to Randwick Military Hospital tortured by nerves, his life was almost intolerable. He was unable to sleep, afraid even to try because of the terrible nightmares which seemed to assail him as soon as he closed his eyes. Nothing could be done to give him relief, and this youngster left the hospital without leave, only returning to apologise to the Commanding Officer. Condition Grew Worse and Worse.
