SATURDAY’S MATCHES The matches played in the Otago Hockey Association’s senior competition on Saturday produced no surprises. University A beat University B in a game which was full of incident, High School Old Boys defeated Technical Old Boys and Albany had a good match with Training College which showed improved form. UNIVERSITY A v. UNIVERSITY B The University A and B teams met on a rough ground which caused hard hitting and fast play. The A team had the better ol the game for a good deal of the time, but the B. team worked hard and the winners got few results that were not earned. The half time spell allowed the players to rally their forces and play moved up and down the field at high speed in fee second spell. The A team, with two, goals in hand, saw the B team equalise, but in the final stages the A forwards passed all the opposition and got a lead of four goals. Ryburn scored five goals for the A team and Alexander one, while Rennie and Childs scored for the B team. The game ended:— University A .. .. 6 goals. ~ , .University B .. .. 2 goals. Messrs H. Pickup and- J. R. Shaw were umpires. ALBANY v. TRAINING COLLEGE Albany and Training College played a well-contested game. College took up the attack from the start, but Albany retaliated strongly and had a short lead at half time. At the start of the second spell College put on some lively attacks and throughout the spell Albany could do little more than keep level. Mong (-2) and Stewart ' (2) scored for Albany, and Currib and White got College’s goals. The scores were:— Albany .. .. .. 4 goals. Training College .. 2 goals, Mr E. D. Brown and Dr B, Monheimer were umpires. H.S. OLD BOYS v. TECHNICAL High School Old Boys and Technical Old Boys provided hockey which was only fair. Play during the first spell was inclined to be scrappy. Neither team seemed able to settle down to combined, movements. Play was. on a higher level during the second spell, and both teams indulged in some pretty passing movements. During this spell Old Boys-scored three goals to Technical’s two. Scorers for Old Boys-were EdgintOn (2), Webb (2) and Martin, while Wedlake and Campbell were the scorers for Technical. The final score was:— High School Old Boys ,5 goals. Technical Old Boys ' 2 goals. Messrs. T.Mulholland and H. Sew Hoy were umpires. SECOND GRADE Wesley 1, Training College 3. University D 2. Y.M.C.A. 1. Albany 5. High School 2. University E 7. High School Old Boys nil, •' . ‘ , ' i. _ ; , WOMEN’S GAMES END OF FIRST ROUND Saturday’s games on the Oval marked the end of the -first round in the women’s First Grade hockey competition/ Chief interest centred in the meeting of the leading teams. Otago and Kings I. and a good match resulted in Kings winning by 2 goals to 1. The placings now are Kings I, Otago and Training College, and the margin of points is so small that there should be keen interest in future matches. University drew with Brighton in a very even game. Training College bea.t Kings II by 7 goals to nil. and Momona beat Dunedin by 2 goals to 1. Otago- v. Kings I - " It' was a very willing fight from whistle to whistle in the match bptween Otago and Kings I. The backs in each team were strong, and fee front lines were attacking vigorously. Play moved swiftly from end to end of the field; but without much resuß from either side. Half time, ( found Kings with 1 goal to Otago’s nil. -life the second half. Otago equalised and the remainder of the spell was well fought out. Towards the close of the game Kings scored again and" held off the keen - attack until the whistle. Scores: • Kings I .. .. .. 2 goals. Otago .... • ■ «• . 1 S°al. . The umpires were Messrs R. S. Walr lace and D. Miller. University v. Brighton The match between Brighton and Unfr versity provided quite an interesting display of hockey. University played a good style of game, with good positional play and combination.. They made the better showing, but found, the Brighton defence particularly strong in the full-backs. Brighton provided its best flashes in individual play, but these failed when confronted with a combined defence. Scores: University .. . • 3 goals. Brighton. ... 2 goals. ; The umpire was Mr T. Bradshaw. Momona v. Dunedin There was not much to choose between Momona and Dunedin. Momona has the better record for the season, but Dunedin has been improving lately and the game was a willing one on ’both sides. The centre of activities ..changed rapidly, but shooting ■ was '.generally weak. It was a good match to watch because of the solo play but, so far as sound team play was concerned. both teams were lacking. The ■ score was:— | ... Momona .. ... •• ,'2 goals. Dunedin .. .. ..1 goal. The umpire was Mr S. P. Todd. College v. Kings II Despite fee greatly improved form •displayed by Kings II in its match last ■week with Otago, it failed to put up an adequate defence against Training (•College, which was playing well m position. The College centring was •very helpful and the front line combined well, with the result that it '.had by far the best of the territorial advantage. In fact, the College goalie M r as only called on once to strike 3 bjlow in the defence. Scores: — College ? goals. Kings II .. ... • Nil. B Grade Bounty I, Otago 0. Momona 3, Glen Ross 1. C Grade Kings 2, Momona I 0. Training College 4, Otago 1.
