' Pin Money , Pin Money is showing a retention of his early speed when spun out in his wor.t at Wanganui. Lowenberg Lowenberg has been getting through gooa useful work since racing at the Grand National meeting. Brush Hurdles The brush hurdles have been dropped from the New Zealand Cup programme in favour of panel hurdles. Disdain i The speedy Disdain continues, to get through useful tasks, and should be ready to race at the early spring meetings Beanllvre 'Beaullvre was rehandicapped to cany (.12 in the Flying Handicap at Wanganui and dropped out at the declaration of acceptances. Old Surrey Old Surrey has been schooled over Hurdles and may be raced over the sticks . on the second day at Wanganui Homily / i The Posterity filly Homily, who shaped well as a three-year-old, has been galr Toping well in .’ her preparation for the Wangariul meeting.; The Five-shilling Bet The' committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club discussed the question of five-shilling investments, and held the matter oyer. ... . - ~V , iv : . ■ ■ Catalogue ■- Catalogue has been accorded an entry lot the New Zealand Cup in case his trill to Australia has to be cancelled The Stewards’ Handicap The weights for the Stewards' Handicap will be delayed this year until after tile second day of the Wellington sprWg meeting. This means that they will be published on October 23 for the race to be run on November 4. Sunny Land Sunny Land, -who has been off the «ene since 1937, is,again, schooling in brilHa»t style at Riccarton. He has plenty of dash, but in the past has not been tei© sound to stand; a strong preparation. The Greymonth Meeting Mr M. J. Fogarty, secretary of the Greymouth ■ Jockey Club, has officially announced the abandonment of the meeting dated for the 9th inst, owing to unsatisfactory acceptances, withdrawal of ■■tax rebate, restriction of petrol, and the general unrest In Europe. A Weighty Drink Another warning "o riders was given by the disqualification of Dainty Dell, who Tost third place in her race at New Plymouth • by her rider, H. Callahan, weighing in 2Rb overweight. Callahan admitted he had a soft drink after weighing out at the correct poundage, and he was fined £2 for his carelessness. New Zealand Oats 1 When Mr J. Richardson took Aranu) over to Australia ho provided an ample supply of feed for his horse. When at Mentone, where Aranul was trained, a trainer stated that the oats brought over by Mr Richardson were twice as good as any that had been grown in Australia Kittle When Mittie won the Woodvllle Rtiahinc Handicap in February of last season she',‘carried 8.13, and beat Florence Mills 8.3 and Lucullus Lad 8.9 by a length and half a length in Imin 14sec. Neither of them won afterwards, and in the Seafield Handicap Mittie meets Lucullus Lad on 181 b better Terms. ■' Long Odds While in Melbourne recently Mr J. Richardson received a request from a friend to back a double for the odds to £lO. The double was secured, and on his return to New Zealand Mr Richardson informed his friend that the double had been secured, and ventured the opinion that the taker could not guess within £15,000 the extent of the odds secured. He further said that he only Invested half the commission, and taken £33,000 to £5 about the double requested—Cortina and Catalogue—and more could have been obtained at the same odds. (Uy Fox Early last season Sly Fox followed two wins in five starts with another success at Auckland, where he won the Hobson Handicap with 9.13 in> Imin 25 3-ssec He was brought down to the Wellington soring meeting, where he won the Wainui Handicap with 8.0 in Imin 40sec and the Watkins Handicap with 8.1 from Dictate 7,10 and 15 others in 2min 7sec This form brought him into favour for engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting He took charge of his rider in the New Zealand Cup and ran himself out at the home turn. He did the same in the Fendalton Handicap and again ran himself to a standstill. Sly Fox subsequently started nix times without gaining a place. He is booked to start in the Flying Handmap at Wanganui, and if cured of his bolting habit may be found amongst the earlv winners of the season llomllv The Posterity filly Homily won three times, was four times second, and five times third in 23 starts. In her last three starts Homily 8.6 won at Egmont over geven furlongs- in Imin 23 3-ssec was

fourth over seven furlongs at Manawatu with 9.0,' and finished with a win in the Connolly Handicap with 8.3 J from Entail 8.6 and Aussie Ra 7.7 in 2min 7 3-ssec. She has been getting through useful work for her engagements at Wanganui Vagarie Advice has been received that the New Zealand-bred Vagarie by Siegfried from Confiscation, was successful in a two-year-old x - ace at Morphettville, South Australia, last Saturday. Bred by Mr R. T Reid, of Hamilton, Vagarie Is a’ bay filly, and she was purchased at the yearling sales at Trentham last January by Mr C. Wheeler on behalf of a South Australian client for 240gns. Gay Son The Beau Perc colt Gay Son, who is engaged at Wanganui, was a front-rank horse last season. When he won four times was second twice, and third six times. He was always up against good company and won at his fifth start in the Liverpool Handicap, which he won with 8.8 and cut the mile out in Imin 37sec His next win was in the Members Handicap at Riccarton, where he won with 8.2 in Imin llsec from Paper Slipper 9.4, Cocksure 7.31 and 10 others. His next win was over a mile and a distance at Woodville. Gay Son’s next and final win of the season was In the Clifford Plate with 8.2 from Stretto 9.0 and three others in 2min 6 3-Bsec. At Napier Kathbella 7.4 beat Gay Son 9.5 over six furlongs in Imin 13 l-ssec. In his final effort of the season Gay Son 8.6 was third to Entail 7,0 and Peerless 8.8, separated by a head and a neck in 2min 4 l-ssec. Centrepolse It will be Interesting to note how Centrepoise shapes in his engagement at Wanganui to-day. At the Wellington winter meeting Centrepolse 9,5 dead-heated with Wagner 9.0 at the end of a mile in heavy going. At the Grand National meeting Wagner 8.1 won the Heathcote Handicap, run over nine furlongs, going away at the finish. The defeated lot included,Dungarvan 9.7, Lowenberg 9.4, Kena 8.5 and Might 8.0, who are engaged in the Marangal Handicap. If Wagner is sent up 71b for beating the above left at Riccarton he would read In with the above figures at 8.8. At Wanganui Dungarvan is dropped 71b, Lowenberg 101 b, Kena 71b and Might 71b. If Wagner is kept up to 81b above the minimum, which would Include his penalty for Riccarton, he would be in at 7.8 at Wanganui. Wagner ran Windsor Chief to a length over nine furlongs in the Sumner Handicap, when giving 71b, and he is thus, say, 41b better than Windsor Chief. If that Is so, Wagner would be in at Wanganui at about 7.12, giving Windsor Chief 41b. At Wellington, Centrepoise was 51b better than Wagner, and that would make the former 8.3 at Wanganui. Centrepolse is In at 7.3, so that on collateral form he has about a stone the best of the weights, through the line with Wagner and Windsor Chief. In other words, Centrepolse / should account for Dungarvan, Lowenberg, Kena arid Might, who were well behind Wagner at Riccarton. Last season Centrepolse won over a mile and a-quarter with 8.0 in 2min 9sec, and with 9.4 over a mile in Imin 45 2-ssec, and dead-heated at Wellington over a mile under 9.5, and "With two stone less should run out a fairly good mile and a-quarter. •*—

October 21, 23.—Greymouth T.C, October 21, 23 or 25.—Auckland T.C. October 23.—Oamaru T.C. October 25 88—Wellington T.C. lTnder Saddle The October programme at New Brighton will include a race under saddle with a £2OO stake and a 2rnin Issec class. Subsidy A report states that Subsidy has settled down under E. Carlyon’s charge, but will rejoin W. Doyle’s stable. Attractively Bred The team being handled by J. B. Pringle includes a young pacer by Jack Potts from Rose Logan, the dam of Windsor Lass. \A Change D. C. Watts, who has been associated with J. Henderson’s stable at Oamaru for several years, has decided to make Canterbury his headquarters. Watts is sure of a big demand for his services in both saddle and sulky. Repeal Repeal, winner of the saddle even! at New Brighton, is a half-brother,# by Native King, to Sir Julien, the leading two-year-old last season. Repeal’s last success was in the same race last Sep* tember, but he was twice placed later, taking a record of 2min 8 4-ssec. A Transfer Eighteen' Carat has been transferred to W S McDonald’s stable at Mangere. where Canadian, who races in the same interests, is also located. Eighteen Carat was a good performer in the south, but has not revealed Ills best since going to Auckland Don Walla Don Walla, the only representative of Walla Walla to race in New Zealand, is now trained at Palmerston North by A. G. Farland. owner of the good trotter Franz Derby Don Walla won a race at the last Auckland matinee meeting and displayed promise. Sir Julien j Si. Julien, the champion two-year-old of last season, has again joined the active brigade after a well-earned spell. Sir Julien started four times last season for two wins and a second, and £B7O in prize money He opened his racing in the Timaru Nursery Stakes won by Highland Scott, but he was out of a place In the Teviotdale Handicap at the Amberley Racing Club’s meeting Sir Julien appeared unlucky to be beaten by Huguenot after doing 3mih 30sec for a mile and a-half, but he made amends by a clear-cut victory in the Juvenile Stakes at the Canterbury Park meeting; Three Tens and Gallant Chief filling the minor places In his only other start Sir Julien won the New Zealand Sapling Stakes In 3min 21 2-ssec,-a New Zealand record for a two-year-old and again the minor places were filled by Three Tens and Gallant Chief Sir Julien has plenty of size for one of his years, but he is a fine typo ot pacer and combines with great speed a good racing temperament. Three Tens was unlucky to run up against such a solid pacer, but in her last three starts she was three times second and won £2BO Though Sir Julien earned his title as two-year-old champion, he may have been lucky to lose the opposition of Highland Scott, a brilliant young pacer, who. after winning the Timaru Nursery Stakes and the Great Northern Stakes, suffered an injury which restricted his facing.
