BALCLUTHA War Intercessory Service At a meeting of the Balclutha Ministers’ 'Association yesterday morning the Rev. H. J. Boyd-Bell (president) in the chair, arrangements were made for the commencement of citizens’ intercessory services, to be addressed by the ministers of the various religious denominations. It was suggested that the services should be held in the Balclutha Presbyterian Church, the various ministers taking part in turn., and that all, of them should endeavour to be present at each service. Fridays, at 2.30 p.m., was suggested as the most suitable day and time, and it was agreed to hold the first service on Friday of next week, when the Rev. Bovd-Bell will lead the service. The chairman expressed the hope that citizens from a wide area would avail themselves of the opportunity for united intercession. The Mayor (Mr J. H. Stevenson). when the decision of the clergy was communicated to him. said he would like very cordially to commend the service to the support of all citizens. Paretai’s Plight The dammed-back flood waters at Paretai spread over a wider area on Tuesday, and some settlers who had not previously been affected had to vacate their holdings. The water has also spread on to some of the holdings at Riverside. Efforts are still being made to remove the obstructing sand banks at the mouth of the Koau branch of the river, but so far the degree of success attained has not been very encouraging. Those engaged are handicapped by the terrain and the lack of proper appliances for such a job. which would entail the use of a dredge MILTON Electrical Storm An electrical storm of fierce intensity was experienced at Milton about 5 p.m. on Monday thunder and lightning being followed by heavy rain. At Circle Hill hail covered the ground .to a depth of about two inches. An alarming experience was related by a farmer from the latter district. He was herding his cows preparatory to milking when the storm started, and the lightning was playing all around him when suddenly another flash struck a gorse hedge a few chains away and set it alight. PORT MOLYNEUX Rifle Club The weekly shoot of the Port Molyneux Miniature Rifle Club was held on Tuesday night.
