“RED” NEW ZEALAND
TO THE EDITOR
Sir, —“ Maran-atha ” asks what 1 think of a quotation from some unknown source alleging that some Russian workers have been dismissed for unpunctuality, and that the demand for alarm clocks in Russia exceeds the supply. I have no hesitation in dismissing that as an insignificant detail. Can it be possible that “ Maran-atha " does not’ know that the use of alarm clocks is practically universal among the hard workers of New Zealand? But he is distressed because Russians must work hard and be punctual Or is it because in Russia everyone must do his share of work, and no one may receive more than a fair share of the product? Behind the screen of a spiritual nom-de-plume , “ Maran-atha ” makes persistent efforts to stir up enmity towards the Communists. He sees the immoral influence of Communism in the Carpenters’ Union, thus betraying the same class bias as the workhouse authorities who solemnly averred that Oliver Twist was born to be hung because he had dared to ask for more.—l am. etc., . H. Gow. Balclutha, Sept. 6
