For the corresponding month of last year rain fell on 10 days for a total of .94in. Farmers’ Union At a meeting of the Lawrence branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held on Saturday evening, Mr R. S. Thompson suggested that since past and present Governments had always urged farmers to increase production, it was reasonable that the Government should now take over all excess mutton at a price to be agreed upon. For this year the excess mutton was 25,000 tons or 1,000,000 carcasses, and he suggested that the Government should dispose of this mutton to orphanages and old peoples’ homes throughout the Dominion, and to all Government institutions financed by the taxpayers, such as general hospitals, mental hospitals and gaols. Personal Mr and Mrs M. Arthur, of Timaru, were recent visitors to Lawrence. Mr J. Forbes, jun., has left to take up a position at Miller's Flat. Mr and Mrs C. G. JennisOn, of Middlemarch, are spending a holiday at Kononi.
