BAN IMPOSED

IMPORTATION OF HORSES FROM UNITED STATES AND CANADA (Pke United Press Association! WELLINGTON, June 8. Owing to the prevalence of disease among horses in the United States and Canada, the importation of horses from those countries into New Zealand is now prohibited. ,A similar prohibition was imposed by Australia a few weeks ago, and New Zealand, in effecting the embargo, the necessary authority for which appears in to-night’s Gazette, is acting in co-ordination with the Commonwealth. Owing to this disease (equine encephalomyelitis), there has been considerable mortality among horses in the United States and Canada recently, and the New Zealand embargo will remain in force until the position is reviewed. The only horses imported from the United States into New Zealand are trotters, but it is considered that a precautionary embargo will not seriously affect trotting interests in the Dominion.
