THE CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL

TO THE EDITOH Sir,—l have a suggestion to offer for a Centennial memorial: That a breakwater should be constructed at the rear of the St. Clair Baths. This would stop the current from scouring out the sand and in time we would have a beach as good as that at Timaru. A breakwater there should not cost a great amount, as there is plenty of rock available close handy. A memorial of this description would be an everlasting and useful one.—l am, etc., Still Another Citizen. Dunedin, June 7. TO THE EDITOR Sir, —An illuminated fountain in a tropical climate would be a thing of beauty but in Dunedin could anything be more absurd? Many years ago a 'fine fountain was presented to the city by the late Woolfe Harris, and for many years it rested in the Queen’s Gardens—a receptacle for rubbish. Eventually it was removed to an obscure corner of the Gardens, where it rests practically unknown to the citizens. The Junior Chamber of Commerce and a number of citizens have publicly protested against the proposed fountain at a cost of £6OOO. The proposal is so utterly ridiculous that the man in the street declines to take it seriously. Will his Worship the Mayor be good enough to enlighten the citizens just where we stand, and how far the proposal has gone? Further, where are the funds to come from if the council is seriousi Strange to relate, we have had no lead from the press.—l am, etc., Dunedin. June 8. Rumble.
