THE “NEW MOON”
OPERATIC SOCIETY’S PRODUCTION Excellently staged and presented, “ New Moon,” the Dunedin Operatic and Dramatic Society’s latest production, is probably the society’s best effort to date. No pains have been spared to bring the production up to the highest possible standard, the settings and costuming having been designed with an eye to the achievement of the greatest effect, while the work of the cast is again of that high order that has characterised previous presentations by the society. Last night’s audience in His Majesty’s Theatre was fully alive to the quality of the entertainment provided by the performers, and all the principals, as well as the supporting members of the large cast, were appreciatively received. The principal role of Marianne is played by Louise Henderson, who sings and acts her way through a difficult part with grace and charm. Arthur Lungley is responsible for a virile and effective performance opposite her, while Daphne Bowman, as Marianne’s maid, Julie, and Richard White, as Vicomte Ribaud, also give outstanding performances. A strong team, consisting of Stan Lawson, R. P. Murphy, and John Gordon, assumes most of the comedy work, which it handles very capably. The ballet and chorus are excellent, and the orchestra, under Mr James Clark, carries out its part of the production with notable skill. The “ New Moon ” season will conclude to-morrow night.
