MR TINKLER WOUNDED AN OPERATION PERFORMED CHANCES OF SURVIVAL SLIGHT (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyrignt* SHANGHAI, June 0. Mr Tinkler was admitted to hospital in Hongkew with three bayonet wounds in the abdomen, a head wound from a rifle butt, and an injured foot. Two German and two Japanese naval surgeons operated, while three Japanese sentries guarded the operating theatre with fixed bayonets. The English and Japanese Consuls remained in the waiting room. The chances of Mr Tinkler’s survival are slight.
The Japanese arrested Mr R. M. Tinkler, an employee of the British finishing mill at Pootung. A Japanese officer was wounded and taken to hospital during a clash between mill strikers and Japanese bluejackets, who intervened to restore order. The charge against Mr Tinkler has not been disclosed, and British officials are prevented from seeing him. MR TINKLER SUCCUMBS (Independent Cable Service) SHANGHAI, June 7. (Received June 8, at 0.5 a.m.) Mr Tinkler died early to-day. PEARL RIVER TRAFFIC A JAPANESE THREAT CANTON, June 6. Japan has withdrawn permission for the British steamer Fatshan to proceed to Hongkong on the grounds that the British are not respecting the Anglo-Japanese agreement that only passengers Would be carried on the Pearl River shipping. The Japanese have threatened stoppage of all British shipping on this river. MADAME CHIANG KAI-SHEK A VISIT TO HONGKONG HONGKONG, June 7. (Received June 8, at 0.15 a.m.) Madame Chiang-Kai-shek, with W. H. Donald and Chinese officials, arrived in a secret plane from army headquarters. This was the signal for great Chinese political activity, and Madame Kai-shek had frequent conferences with her brother, Mr T. V. Soong, director of the Bank of China.
