MR NASH’S MISSION

SIR HARRY BATTERBEE’S VIEW SOLUTION OF DIFFICULTIES VALUE OF FRIENDLY CONTACTS PLEA TO MANUFACTURERS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 7. Reference to the visit to London of the Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) was made to-day in the course of an address at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon by Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Zealand. “If questions arise between individuals or Governments, friendly discussion is the best, and, indeed, the only way of solving such difficulties, and therefore I think that Mr Nash’s present visit to London to discuss certain questions with the United Kingdom Government is greatly to be welcomed. “ Obviously, it would be entirely wrong of me to say anything about the object of his mission at a time when negotiations are beginning; but I feel that if those negotiations are conducted, as I am confident they will be, in that spirit which I have described, an understanding mutually satisfactory to both parties will be reached. “ I know that that is the sincere hope and wish of the United Kingdom Government.”

Speaking of the development of secondary industries in New Zealand, Sir Harry said: “ This new phase of industrial life in the Dominion is, as you all realise, attracting considerable interest at Home in common with other matters affecting economic life here. To those of you concerned in any way with the establishment and development of a secondary industry, I would ask you to look to the United Kingdom first if you are seeking new sources of supply of raw materials or plant and machinery—to give first place in your inquiries to the United Kingdom manufacturers, and give them the opportunity of assisting you, as in most cases they will be able to do.

“At present there is need, as there never was before, for all British people to stand together and assist one another by every means in their power.” Sir Harry concluded by stating that the fable of the bundle of sticks was just as true to-day as it was 2000 years ago.
