Women's Hockey The annual seven-a-side women's hockey tournament conducted by the Eastern Southland Women's Hockey Association was held at Gore on Monday afternoon in perfect weather. Sixteen teams from all parts of the province took part in the games, and a high standard of play was witnessed. The final of the main competition was won by Waikaia A. which has been victorious in the Eastern Southland tournaments eight times in the last nine years. Golf A large number of members of the Gore Golf Club took part in a stroke match on the Croydon links on Saturday afternoon. Ideal conditions prevailed, but, the scoring was not as good as was expected. The match was won by A. S. Atkins, whose round of 83 was two strokes below his handicap. The following were the best cards returned:—A. S. Atkins 83—15—68, S. B. Taylor 92—20—72, G. R. Martin 87— 13—74, G. D. Caldwell 83—7—76, L. C. Barron 89—13—76, G. Young 91—15 76, L. G. Thomson 85—8—77, L. A. Barsdell 88—11—77. Personal Regret at the departure for Taumaranui this week of Sergeant J. Abel and high praise for his capabilities as an officer were expressed by members of the police staff in the Gore area at a farewell meeting in the Gore Courthouse. Sergeant Abel was presented with a barometer by Constable H. E.Pearse (Waikaia), who extended the best wishes of the district officers. Other speakers were Constables H. Blamires (Tapanui), J. McCormack (Clinton), L. J. Brazier (Mataura). J. Potts. J. Feeley, C. Matheson and E. W. Fibbes, Inspector R. F. Hynes (Transport Department), Messrs L. R. Higgins, R. Menzies and A. Osman. Sergeant Abel suitably replied. Amateur Radio Transmitters
Representatives from Dunedin, Balclutha, Invercargill and other centres in Otago and Southland were present at the annual banquet of the Eastern Southland branch of the New Zealand Association of Amateur Radio Transmitters at Gore on Saturday evening. The chair was occupied by the president of the branch (Mr H. A. Callander), who. in his welcoming remarks, mentioned that Gore had been among the pioneering districts in the Dominion for amateur radio transmission. One of the first transmitters in New Zealand had been designed and constructed in 1912 by the science master of the Gore High School, Mr J. E. Strachan, and the keenness shown in the early days was still evident. A short toast 1M was honoured as follows:—" The NZ.A.R.T.," proposed by Mr A. W. Wilkinson and responded to by Mr W.
