GERMAN CENSUS
POSITION OF MINORITIES POLISH ALLEGATION ATMOSPHERE OF TERROR (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) BERLIN, May 17. (Received May 17, at 10.30 p.m.) To-day is census day throughout Germany. The results will not be known for a long time, but it is believed that a special effort will be made to publish the figures of the Polish population speedily. Warsaw affirms that the Polish minority consists of 1,500,000 people, which Germany denies. The population must, in addition to nationality and mother tongue, record their racial conviction, namely, the race to which they feel they belong. A message from Warsaw says that the Gazeta Polska recalls that Germany protested violently when similar forms for the Czechoslovakian census contained a racial question, “ and not' without reason because this . supplies the easiest way of suppressing minorities.” Other newspapers say that terror reigns in Polish centres and they allege that the census is being held in an atmosphere of lies and terror.
