TRUE LOYALTY
VIEWS OF SIR ERNEST DAVIS CO-OPERATION WITH THE GOVERNMENT EXPORT OF CAPITAL CONDEMNED (Special to Dailv Times) AUCKLAND, Nov. 3. Surprise at reports to the effect that capital was leaving New Zealand was expressed by the Mayor (Sir Ernest Davis), when he declared the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce officially open. His reason for surprise, Sir Ernest said, was that New
Zealand remained as good a country as ever, and was, in his judgment, still the best investment for local capital which supplies the arteries of commerce and industry with their life’s blood.
“ Every man has a right to transmit money to the destination or his choice, provided, of course, he allows the call of patriotism to go unheeded,” the Mayor declared. “After all, though, is not the patriotism best reflected in the consistent protection by every means in our power of the land we love and desire to serve? “As an impartial observer,” Sir Ernest said, “ I hold that the Government of the day is entitled to receive from the commercial, as from every other section, that measure of co-oneration and goodwill essential to the successful administration of the affairs of the country. Doubtless, the Government, for its part, is as interested in the welfare of business as it is in any other phase of national activity, and should welcome any initiative which seeks to subjugate party politics and sectional policies to the higher ideals of understanding, tolerance, -and mutual trust.
“ This is my conception of patriotism founded on complete faith in New Zealand’s future,” Sir Ernest concluded. “Any other attitude is to be deplored. I am sure you, as business men, will agree.”
