THE Otago Daily Times. " Inveniam viam aut faciam." [Established November 15, 1861.] DUNEDIN, SATURDAY, JULY 20, 1867.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO

Since the despatch of the Panama Mail, the shipping business has been of its usual average at this season of the year. During the past two weeks there have been, exclusive of small coasters, 17 arrivals and 23 departures, the inward tonnage being 4542, and the outward, 5399. The ship Vesta has been the only arrival from Home. She put in an appearance on the 7th instant, having had a protracted passage of 123 days. The schooner Jessie Kelly, from the Mauritius, with sugar, on the 12th. is the only Foreign arrival. From the North there is no news of anv importance respecting Native movements. The worst fears respecting the missing men at Opotiki are realised; the bodies of both Beggs and Moore have been found, buried near their own wharre. News has also been received of an attack upon Bennett White and some natives by the Hauhaus near Opotiki White and one native were killed. It is not imagined that the Hau-haus are in force, In fact, when they are sought after, thus far they have escaped. These outrages are the more annoying, as from every other district of the Island there appears to be a desire for peace on the part of the Maoris; but with no settled industrial habits, a race so excitable may be roused to partial insurrection by‘very trifling events. Three hundred of the Ngarauru tribe who had been in arms, tendered their allegiance at Wanganui. There was a ploughing match at Green Island yesterday; and in the evening a large number of farmers and others met at dinner, in the Kaikorai Hotel. A report of the proceedings will be given on Monday.

(BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.) (from our own correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Thursday. Mr Reynolds’s motion, for vote by Ballot, was withdrawn after a two hours’ debate. Mr Haughton introduced a Bill for the gradual reduction of the gold duty, at the rate of sixpence an ounce per year. . Friday, 7 p.m. . . . The motion affirming the policy of Provincialism as against the Government, is to be tabled on Tuesday next. . . . The Hau-haus who recently submitted at Wanganui, have returned to Patea, and have stopped the surveys there, alleging that Mr Parris promised them reserves which have not been made. GOLD STATISTICS.
