GENERAL ELECTION

THE WALLACE ELECTORATE LABOUR ORGANISER APPOINTED At a meeting of the Wallace Labour Representation Committee, held at Lumsden, Mr J. B. Birtles was appointed official organiser for thd Labour Party in the Wallace electorate. Mr Birtles, whose appointment was unanimously endorsed by the assembled delegates, is well known in Western Southland, where he was sheepfarming in the Birchwood district for a number of years and was a member of the Ohai Railway Board and chairman of the Birchwood School Committee. He was chairman of the Waiau Branch of the Crown Tenants’ Association and vice-president of the Southland Crown Tenants’ Association, and was a member of the Nightcaps Farmers’ Union, being a vice-president for a term and on occasions a delegate to the Southland Farmers’ Union Conference and Provincial Executive. Mr Birtles, who is a member of a well known Otago farming family, has travelled extensively in Australia and had made a study of farming problems. He has been an active member of the Labour Party for a number of years and was a foundation member and first secretary of the Nightcaps branch. DUNEDIN SOUTH ELECTORATE Mr H. V. Smith, who has announced his candidature for the Dunedin South seat as an Independent, advises that all communications should be addressed to 315 Castle street, Dunedin. Mr Smith will shortly pay a visit to the Southland sawmills.
