DUNEDIN FANCIERS’ CLUB

DOGS ON SHOW LARGE ENTRIES FORWARD LABRADORS MOST POPULAR . Judging in the dogs section of the Dunedin Fanciers’ Club’s annual show was commenced yesterday, when 210 entries, representative of the majority of the better-known breeds of sporting and non-sporting breeds. were benched. The most interesting feature of the show was the rapid rise in the popularity of the Labradors. In previous years the spaniels have been the most popular of the sporting dogs, but this year they have been displaced by the Labradors. Competition in these classes was good, particularly in the novices, and was not confined to a few breeders. Most of the entries traced their descent from two or three sires, and this made the judge’s task an unenviable one. Cocker spaniels were still general favourites, owners showing a preference for the plain black. Alsatians have not shown any signs of recovering the position which was theirs some years ago, and, although there were some new exhibitors, competition was best in the open and colonial classes Exhibits that attracted particular notice were two beautiful golden retrievers shown by Mr D. A. Gbvan, of Brighton. This is the first time that dogs of this type have been shown in Dunedin, and the breed - is comparatively rare in New Zealand.

In the toy section, wire-haired terriers were easily the most popular breed; with Scottish terriers in second place. All the terrier classes were, however, well patronised, and showed a definite popularity, which has been atained at the expense of the more strictly toy doys, such as Pomeranians and Pekinese. Quality throughout was good. There were only about 20 cats in the show, the majority of these being Persians. Children’s pets were of less variety than last year, being confined to bantams, budgerigars, and finches; The general lay-out of the show was most attractive, and the thoroughness of the preparations in this direction was only typical of. the efficiency' of the arrangements of the committee in all other departments of the show. The judging of the dogs will be concluded to-day. In the afternoon some ch'iiren’s competitions will be judged ana in the evening the stakes classes will be decided. The following are the results:— CATS Judge: Mrs M. Hargreaves Persians Smoke male, over 12 months; One entry—Miss M, Steven 1. Blue female, over 12 months. Two entries—Mrs S. Jory 1.
