SOUTH OTAGO

BALCLUTHA Opening of Freezing Works At a meeting of the directors of the South Otago Freezing Company, it was decided to open the killing season on January 4. New Zealand Turnips A Balclutha resident, who is closely associated with farming in the district, has just received a copy of a leading Australian weekly newspaper containing a picture of a crop of turnips grown at the Crescent, Stirling, by Messrs Wilson Bros. The paper savs: — “In forwarding this photograph of a crop of swedes grown at Stirling, New Zealand, a correspondent writes: ' This' is not a freak crop, but typical of many in the district. It yielded 110 tons to the acre, the 12 acres netting the growers £ 1200.’ ” When our dairy farmers on the northern rivers (says the Sydney paper) are enterprising enough to produce fodder crops like this, there will be more justification for their resentment of the criticism recently passed on their methods by visitors from New Zealand. Cricket Fixtures for Saturday are:—A Grade; Balclutha v. Owaka, at Balclutha; Kaitangata v. Milton, at Milton. B Grade; Waiwera v. High School, at Waiwera; Lawrence v. Owaka, at Owaka; Benhar v. Milton, at Benhar; Balclutha v. Clinton, at High School ground.
