THE DIVINING ROD
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —Allow me to thank Mr J. M. Stewart for his letter on the above subject. I have interested myself in this matter for over 40 years, and am satisfied that no one has the gift of water divining. At most, the “ diviner ”is a conjecturer. If he is blindfolded and led over an underground pipe with water running through it, probably his rod will not bend. Further, it may bend over a spot where a shaft has been sunk for a great depth and afterwards filled in. The alleged gift has thus no practical value. As regards the power to locate metal, this can be disproved by placing a piece of the metal in both hands, closing them and asking the conjecturer which hand the metal is in. He will always say it is in the one and not the other. He will give you a like assurance if the metal is in neither hand.—l am, etc., Practical.
