BETTING SYSTEMS
10 fill Miron Sir, —After reading the last letter of “Small Punter (No. 2)” it is rather difficult to determine which system he now advocates. At first I thought ho was a 75/25 man: now I find he is quite satisfied to have win and place at Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. With regard to his home town, he seems to suffer from an inferiority complex, calling meetings here secondrate. If the win and place system is so “admirable” for the north, why should it not also be successful for the Dunedin public, “geese” and “ ganders” included? As regards Forbury Park, I would be the last to complain if the straightout win and place system were adopted “in the public's interest,” as recommended by “Small Punier (No. 2).” The present Forbury system was adopted in the effort to satisfy diehard 75/25 punters who resent change, even when it means advancement. “Small Punter (No. 2)” says" my figures are somewhat astray. Surely the horses that paid 13s, 12s, IDs 6d, and 9s. for second place on the 75/25 machine were hot enough favourites fur anyone. On the place
machine these same horses paid £2 6s 6d, £1 11s 6d, £2 3s, and £1 3s. Surely this is convincing. “ Small Punter (No. 2) ” evidently is one of those who, at race meetings, is so busy extracting information from the “ heads ” and tails that he is probably often shut out from the totalisator. As he still has faith in his luck, however, good luck to him! During this long correspondence I think I have given good and sufficient reasons for my preference for the win and place system, and I still see no reason to alter my opinion.—I am, etc., J. M. Samson. February 5. [By inadvertence this letter, which should have reached the editor on Friday last, was not delivered to him until Saturday.—Ed., O.D.T.]
