GENEROUS BENEFACTOR

FUNERAL OF MR JOHN EDMOND LARGE NUMBER OF MOURNERS Eloquent tributes to his philanthropic work were paid by the Rev. W. Allen Stevely yesterday at the funeral of Mr John Edmond, who died at Surry Hills, Melbourne, on January 19. During his life time Mr Edmond was a generous and consistent benefactor to hospitals, charitable and philanthropic institutions and the Otago University. He was 75 years of age at the time of his death, and was a son of the founder of the well-known firm of John Edmond, hardware merchants. In its early days Mr Edmond was the firm’s traveller throughout Otago, and he was largely responsible for its successful establishment. He won the respect of everyone as a result of his contributions to charity, and he was an unfailing giver to hospitals during the Christmas season. The service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. W. Allen Stevely, and there was a large number of mourners to pay their last respects to a man whose generosity had made him ■ beloved by many. Hazlett (president Southland Racing Club), Charles Grater, N. Kirkcaldy W. Harman Reeves, Sandford Cox. John M’Donald, Hector M'Donald, W J. Strong, the Rev. Mr Taylor. Messrs E. C. Reynolds, L. Salmond, James Walker, W. Crawford. J. Trengrove, Colonel E. R. Smith,. Messrs Crosby Morris (representing the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty_ to Animals and the Dunedin Amenities Society) Patients and Prisoners’ Aid Society), F. W. Mitchell (representing the Patients and Prisoners’ Air Society), Paterson, Calder, and Ferens (representing the Otago Early Settlers' Association), R. H. Neilson (Dunedin Public Art Gallery), Thomas Somerville (Presbyterian Social Service Association), Adjutant Fletcher (Salvation Army), Messrs J. W. Dove. D M'Lennan, M. Silverstone, and John Jacobs (Otago Hospital Board), Lady Sidey (Plunkel Society), Messrs W J. Morrell (Chancellor Otago University), L. D. Ritchie. Dr James Fitzgerald, Dr Soper, and Mr H. Chapman (Otago University). Mr E. S. Wilson (Otago Rugby Union), and representatives of the Little Sisters of the Poor. Knox College. Batcheor and St. Helens Maternity Hospitals.
