MONTHLY MEETING OF BOARD The monthly meeting of the Board of Managers of the King Edward Technical College was held yesterday afternoon, and was attended by Messrs J. J. Marlow (chairman), J. T. Paul, F L Lawrence, L. Sanderson. H. H. Johnson. W. G. Cocking. W. D. Sutherland, Dr E. Gardner. Mrs W. Herbert, and Miss L. Sullivan. A motion of sympathy with Messrs T Scott and A. Marshall on the death of their wives was carried, members standing in silence. The chairman welcomed Mr w. G. Cocking to the meeting. GENERAL

A copy of a circular issued by the Auckland School of Art regarding the unification of control of post-primary schools was received. The principal (Mr W. G. Aldridge) said that it was a most complex and extremely difficult question to decide.—Mr Paul suggested that the matter be referred to the Appointments Committee for consideration and report, and, after a short discussion. the proposal was approved. In connection with the Health Stamp Campaign, it was decided, on the motion of the chairman, that the board purchase 200 covers. COMMITTEE REPORTS

On behalf of the Finance Committee, Mr Hayward reported October salaries as totalling £1193 2s lOd, and accounts. £226 9s Bd, including cost of the hall boiler (£63 ss). less allowance on old boiler and piping (£6 17s ,2d), and Balmacewen maintenance (£4), bringing the total spent up to £l3 4s, as voted in August. The Fordigraph machine (£29 10s) and supplies (£2 17s) completed all the larger expenses to which the board was committed. The final payment of £l2l Ids had been made upon Mr Hynes’s certificate of a satisfactory test of the progress lathe. His committee recommended that Miss W, Ingram be added to the office staff for a period of six months at a salary of £4O as from October 19, in place of Miss R. Front, who had resigned in June. , - Reporting on behalf of the Works Committee. Mr F. L. Lawrence recommended that the principal ask the Education Department whether it was now prepared to make grants towards playground improvements and maintenance of buildings. The reports were adopted. The Appointments Committee agreed to support the request of Messrs Hanna and Alexander for a standard gymnasium costume for boys at a total cost of approximately 3s 6d. The resignation of Miss C. M. Anderson, home science mistress, as from January 31. 1937. was received with regret. , „ It was decided to approve of the suggestion to raise the rates of payment of certain senior accountancy classes, and to make a corresponding increase in the fees of paying students in evening classes, by arrangement with the Education Department. PRINCIPAL’S REPORT The principal (Mr W. G. Aldridge), reporting on the work for the month of October, asked the board’s approval of the following arrangements:—October 29, annual athletic sports, at Carisbrook; October 28 to November 10; evening school examinations; November 18 to November 25, Technical High School examinations: December 11, Technical High School closes for 1936. Mr W. G. Cocking has been elected in place of Mr W, W. Batchelor as a representative of local employees for the period ending July, 1937. The postal election for a successor to the late Mr L. A. Walker was completed on Saturday, October 17. Votes may not be counted until October 24. Unofficial word was received from the local Public Works Department that all the alterations desired for the new art wing have been approved with the single exception of sound-proofing between floors. The department is prepared to consider adding tints to the -facings of the art school if it approves the sample sketch to be submitted by the board.

Authority to print the following books was also sought:—Dunedin Technical High School Song Book (second edition): Commerce, Book I, F. J. Gair (second edition); Commerce, Book 11. F. J. Gair; Notes on Mercantile Law, Part I (Nos. (c) and (d) have been used in typescript form up to this year) First-year Book-keeping, L. D. Mlver (binding only; authority was granted some months ago for the preparation of a sample edition of this book; all but the binding has been done in the college office). First-year Typewriting Exercises, to replace a book which has been withdrawn from the market. The report was adopted.
