UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

.MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the council of the Otago University was held yesterday afternoon and was attended by .the chancellor, Mr W. J. Morrell (in the chair), Bishop Fitchett, Messrs James Wallace. J. Robertson, A. Steel. F. W. Mitchell, W. R. Brugh, J. W. Howorth, S. Rice. Sir Undo Ferguson, the Rev. D. C. Herron, Dr James Fitzgerald, Dr R. J T. Bell, and Dr Stanley Batchelor. It was decided to forward a letter ol sympathy to Mr J M. Paterson, dean of commerce, on tie death of his wife The secretary of the Otago University Students’ Association wrote thanking the council for assistance renderec during the past year.—The chairman said it was very pleasant ic receive such a letter, and on his suggestion it was decided to thank the association for the cordial relations which existed between the association and the council. Dr D’Ath forwarded a report on the preparation of catgut for the Dunedin Hospital during the past year. The amount due by the TJ '' or >ital Board was £6O 13s 9d and the amount saved by the board was £l2l 19s.—It was explained that the catgut was now being prepared by the M"' 5 '" 01 School. PROFESSORIAL BOARD The registrar forwarded sundry recommendations from the Professorial Board. , The board recommended that Mr W Downie Stewart be asked to deliver the graduation address in 1937. —Approved. The board had appointed Dr Soper to deliver the inaugural address in 1937. —Received. * The board forwa— 1 Pr ' r (lie coun cil’s approval recommendations regarding the award of the Inglis Memorial Prize. (An amount of approximately £4O will later be handed to the council to provide for the annual award of this prize.)—The recommendations were approved, the registrar reporting that the money had now come to hand. The board recommended that the Fowler Scholarship (for the fifth-year students) should be awarded to L. S. Antonoff-Lewis and P Service. —Approved. WORKS COMMITTEE

The Works Committee reported that the architects stated that during the past month the painters had been working on the windows and exterior metal work at the Dental School. —■ This was noted.

The architects forwarded an estimate of the cost of lighting the quadrangle with single control and with double control.—This was approved, double control to be installed. The tender of the North End Furnishing Company, £53 I3s 9d, had been accepted for covering the staircase in the arts building with lino. —This was noted. Mr Wallace asking that his dissent be recorded to this work being done. The architects reported on sundry requirements in the chemistry department.—This work was approved. The installing of central heating m the chemistry and geolcw block was referred to the Budget Committee. Certificates amounting to £llO 10s 8d were passed for payment. Consideration of library site was held over till next meeting.

The report was adopted. FINANCE AND MEDICAL , COMMITTEES

The Finance and Medical Committees reported as follows: Dr Mullin, librarian, Medical School, requested the purchase of the British Encyclopaedia of Medical Practice; 10 or 12 volumes at £2 10s a volume. It was suggested that the work be charged to the Barnett Fund.—This was agreed to. The dean of the medical faculty reported by word of mouth regarding Mr Rodney Kennedy, and recommended that he should be appointed in place of Miss Alexander as artist in the Public Health Department at the same salary as was paid to Miss Alexander, the appointment to commence as from September I.—This recommendation was approved. The committee considered the appointment of a junior dental nurse in the Dental School.—On the recommendation of the dean of the faculty it was resolved that Miss Jean Johnston be appointed to this position. The report was adopted. FINANCE AND HOME SCIENCE COMMITTEES

The Finance and Home Science Committees submitted the following report:— i The committees considered a request from the dean of the home science faculty that an Aga cooker be installed in Studholme House.—The request was declined. The report was adopted. FINANCE COMMITTEE ALONE

The Finance Committee alone reported as follows: ® A letter was received from the High Commissioner, dated July 20, asking for payment of £238 8s 5d in connection with the expenses of the appointment of a professor of chemistry, including £2OO passage money to Dr Soper.—The amount' in question, plus exchange, was passed for payment. The committee considered a report from Drs Lawson and Findlay in respect of requirements for experimental education, and it was resolved that the chairman and registrar should make further inquiries and report. The committee considered a request from the University Rowing Club for a loan of £3oo.—lt was resolved to grant this request subject to the receipt of an undertaking to make repayments at the rate of £SO per annum, and also to pay interest at overdraft rates during such periods as the University account might be in debit, the undertaking to be signed by the president or secretary of the Students’ Association. The committee considered the conditions on which Mr Ferguson should be granted leave of absence.—On the recommendation of Dr Findlay it was resolved that the work should be undertaken by the following at the remuneration stated:—A. N. Prior, £192; K. W. Glasgow, £3O; H. Hudson. £ls; and F. W. Guest, £3O.

The committee considered what action should be taken regarding the public risk policy, the New Zealand Insurance Company desiring the exclusion of risk in respect to dental treatment.—lt was resolved that Mr Mitchell and the registrar make further inquiries and report. The committee considered a recommendation from the Hocken Library Committee that, pending a permanent decision regarding the appointment of a librarian, the work be supervised by the University librarian.—This temporary arrangement was approved. The amount of £IOO was authorised for painting work as from October 1. Authority was given to Dr Benham to spend £lO in the purchase of the specimens of certain birds. The report was adopted.
