EARLY MORNING ATTACK
WOMAN'S ALARMING EXPERIENCE FOUND MAN IN BEDROOM A startling experience was undergone by a woman in North-East Valley yesterday morning, when she awoke to And a man in her bedroom and was shortly subjected to an attack by the intruder, who later decamped with a small sum of money. The woman, who is still suffering from shock, in addition to two black eyes, is Mrs Jessie Cleland, who resides at 10 Birchfleld avenue, North-East Valley. Her husband, Mr William Cleland, who is a baker, left for his work at about 3 a.m., and about an hour later Mrs Cleland awoke to find a man in the room. She promptly screamed, at which the intruder struck her several times over the face with what she thought to be a shoe or a slipper. In spite of a determined resistance offered by Mrs Cleland, the man inflicted two black eyes before leaving the room. Mrs Cleland's cries for assistance awakened her young son, who was sleeping in an adjoining room, but the neighbours were not aroused. When the milkman called about 5 a.m. Mrs Cleland told him of her experience, and the police, who were called in, found, after an examination of the house, that a sum of 8s to 9s had been stolen. No arrest had been made by the police last night.
