YESTERDAY’S PROCEEDINGS

LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

(Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 9. The Legislative Council met at 11 a.in. LEAVE OF ABSENCE. Three days’ leave of absence was granted lo Mr C. J. Carrington and Air J. Goodall on account of illness. FAIR RENTS BILL.

The council went into committee on the Fair Rents Bill. The Leader of the Council (Air M. Fagan) moved an amendment providing for landlords and tenants to agree on a fair rent with the approval of an inspector of factories. Another amendment excluded from the operation of the Act dwelling houses disposed of under the approved housing scheme embracing the letting of houses on leases containing compulsory or optional purchasing clauses. An amendment was also moved enabling a landlord to obtain possession of a dwelling if he requires it for the use of a person in his regular employment. A further amendment empowered a magistrate to give a landlord leave to distrain for rent without the necessity of giving notice to a tenant.

Air W. Perry moved —“ That the Act should not apply where the weekly rental exceeded £3.”

All the amendments were agreed to and the Bill was passed.

DISTRESS AND REPLEVIN BILL.

The Distress and Replevin Amendment Bill was also passed, and the council rose at 12.10 p.ni..

HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

(From Oub Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, June 9. A variety of topics was discussed during to-day’s sitting of the House of Representatives. Almost tlfe whole of the afternoon was taken up with consideration of the report on the petition of chemists praying for protection against the competition by chain pharmacy stores. The second reading of the Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill was continued for a short time, Mr W. T. Anderton (Govt., Eden) being the only speaker. Before crowded galleries in the evening the second reading debate on the Broadcasting Bill was inaugurated by the Postmaster-general, Mr F. Jones. The other speakers wore Messrs A. Hamilton (Opposition, Wallace), C. L. Carr (Govt., Tirnaru), D. M'Dougall (Ind., Matanra), J. Hargest (Opposition, Awarau) and the Minister of Education, Mr P. Fraser. The debate was interrupted when the House rose at 10.45 p.m. until to-morrow morning.
