ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
STRUCK BY TRUCK t MAN FATALLY INJURED. (Special to Dailt Times) KUROW, March 19. The inquest on the body of Alexander MTverrow, who died as the result of injuries received when he was struck by a truck at the Waitaki Hydro works on March 2, was held in Kurow yesterday before the coroner (Mr W. H. Frith). Mr Grater appeared for the family of the deceased. Mr M. M'Carthy appeared for the Workers’ Union, and Mr Alecock for the Public Works Department. Leslie Clarence Watson, a labourer employed by the Public Works Department at Waitaki Hydro, stated that at 10 aim. on March 2 he was working on the north bank excavation of the dam when the accident occurred. M'Kerrow and he had pushed a full truck of metal on to the turntable and were in the act of turning the truck. They had. hardly had the truck round on to the cross tails when M'Kerrow called out to him that the truck was running forward. Witness held against the-weight of the truck, but it kept running forward. Just before the truck reached the turntable points witness jumped clear. M'Kerrow was on the lake side of the truck, standing on the ground on the side of the, line. As the truck ran forward it tipped towards him, striking him and knocking him down. Witness went to M'Kerrow’a assistance, together with others. M'Kerrow informed them that he was injured about the hips. He was carried to the top of the bank and was placed on a stretcher and carried to the boiler house. Witness had worked on the turntable for about two months. During that time he had never experienced difficulty in turning the truck on the turntable. , , Corroborative evidence was given by Edwin Bain, Alexander Simpson Taylor and Charles William Short. The coroner stated that in his opinion no blame'was attachable to any person, and that it was one of those unfortunate accidents which occurred from time—to time. His verdict would be that the deceased met his death through injuries received when he was struck by a truck of metal, which became derailed while being turned on a turntable at the north bank excavation, Waitaki Hydro, ou March 2.
CAVERSHAM FATALITY The inquest was opened yesterday before the coroner (Mr H. W. Bundle) on James Masson, the five-year-old boy who was killed on Wednesday through falling beneath the wheels of a motor lorry on the Main South road, near the Caversham tram terminus. Evidence of identification was given by the boy’s father, John Masson, and the inquest was adjourned sine die. DEATH FROM POISONING (Peb United Press Association) WELLINGTON, March T 9, Identified as Stanley Mervyn Massey, aged 29, who was living apart from his wife, the man who was admitted to the hospital from the Trentham racecourse on Monday evening and believed to have been suffering from some kind of poison ing, died shortly before noon to-day.
