LAKE COUNTY SHOW

A SUCCESSFUL EVENT HIGH QUALITY EXHIBITS The twenty-seventh annual show of the Lake County A. and P. Society took place at. Lake Hayes last Wednesday under highly favourable conditions. Rain fell all the week-end, and the subsequent rather wintry conditions made the committee somewhat apprehensive regarding the weather; but show day dawned tine and sunny, and it remained so, though a south-westerly breeze which was blowing wag a little unpleasant. The attendance was a record one, which was reflected in a big increase in the gate receipts. In fact, the books of the society shoAV that this source of revenue has almost doubled in the last three years. All parts of the district were fully represented, and the modern means of quick, comfortable transport—the motor car — brought many people from distances that In earlier years could not have been looked to for patronage. The New Zealand Railways enterprise in arranging an excursion from Glenorchy and lakeside stations—an experiment which was first tried last year—brought a good contingent to the show, wTiich was an appreciable help to the society in more ways than one. The entries were well maintained, several new exhibitors being a pleasing feature. The quality of the entries, too, was of a high standard, thus reflecting that farm husbandry, in all its branches is in capable hands in Lake County and the surrounding districts. Show days are., occasions that bring to mind the expression of the ex-Governor-General of this Dominion, that farming is not a " duffer's job." Rather, as Lord Bledisloe said, there is no occupation that requires for its success more skill, ingenuity, and resourcefulness than farming. In the exercise of the home arte evidence was not lacking that these also are cultivated with skill and energy, making them a fit complement for the toil and industry of the man on the land. The announcements throughout the day were made per medium of a public speaker amplifier, operated by Mr N. M. Hall. The society can be congratulated on the team work of its office-bearers, stewards, and others, who all worked indefatigably.' .Mr D. H. Cockburn, who is in his third year of office as president, gave them the lead in this direction. Each year he has explored new avenues for ideas, and the financial success of last Wednesday's fixture proved that his efforts have borne fruit. The veteran secretary, Mr P. M. Tobin, gave efficient service. HORSES. The competition, in draughts was disappointing, there being several solo entries. Kawarau Falls Station (D. Jardine) was the largest exhibitor. Sherwood Print, shown by Anthony Cassin, was adjudged the champion entire of this section, and Mr Jardine's entry secured a like honour in the section for mares. The Leo Lee Cup, for most points in draughts, also went to Kawarau Falls Station. Last year the cup was also won by Mr Jardine. Though the thoroughbred sectjon was not well filled, it was outstanding for a nice ring of dry mares or geldings which were of a good type and fit for any country show. The hackney classes were conspicuous for a good stamp of hacks in the list and 13st sections. In a ring of eight of the" former, Mrs J. S. Hunt (Maungawera) and D. Jardine (Kawarau Falls) carried off the awards. The judge, however, found the champion of the section in the 13st hacks ( in D. G. Jardine's'Peak, which by its beautiful manners and performance proved to be the outstanding horse on the ground. The class for ladies' hacks brought forward a good ring of eight, the red card being awarded to Miss M. M'Namee. CATTLE, The cattle forward provided a good deal of variety and interest. Ayrshires constituted the strongest breed. The champion in this class was found in the entry of Mrs Jessie V. Allan (Thurlby Domain), while the Jersey herd of Mr E. C. Paterson ("Ayrburn") provided the reserve champion. Messrs W. Reid and Sons (" The Mill," Arrowtown) secured championship honours in Friesians. The judge.was, generally speaking, impressed with the type of animals forward. SHEEP. The sheep display was again interesting, and the quality on the whole very good, though, as observed by the judges, the effects of the dry weather on pastures was evident. Most,-of the veteran exhibitors were represented, their entries coming well into the prize list. In the merinos, Messrs -Watt Bros. (Frankton) collected a good number of red cards, but the championship honours went to Mr W. A. Scaife, of Glendhu, for his oneshear ram. This breeder's two other entries also carried off premier awards. In the Romneys, Messrs W. Paterson and son, of "Ayrburn," supplied their customary entrie s representing both quantity and - quality, though the champion ewe came from the flock of C. Gawn (Maungawera), and the champion ram from that of Mr D. H. Cockburn (" Hazelburn," Wharehuanui). Wanaka district also showed with success in the Corriedale classes, the champion ram being the entry of Mr J. S. Hunt (Maungawera). Mr W. S. Reid. of "Willowbrook," Arrowtown, was also a successful exhibitor, A fine Southdown ram, recently imported by Mr J. S. Hunt and bred by Mr Pierpont Morgan in England, came in for a great deal of admiration, as well as the coveted card. The crossbreds were well-filled sections, Mr D. H. Cockburn securing the majority of the prizes. A young grower, Mr T. M. Houston, also bad encouraging success. The judge's awards were-fairly well distributed in the fat sheep classes. Mr D. H. Cockburn had little difficulty in lifting the cup for most points in the 'sheep sections, an honour which also went his way last year. DOGS. , The entry of dogs was one of the smallest on record—collies, rough and smooth, being all that were on exhibition. The champion card went to R. W. Brown's Buff. GRAIN. SEEDS AND ROOTS. The quality of the grain forward was particularly bright, the high standard which .has always obtained in Lake County being well maintained. A certain amount of surprise was expressed by the judge that there were not more entries in n district such as this. Barley and partridge peas were outstanding examples of these cereals. The collection of roots was a fairly substantial one. the various classes of turnips as well as potatoes being particularly well grown. Mr P. Hansen, of " Notoiti," Frankton, had a "field" day in among the red cards, though competition was keen in all the classes. DAIRY PRODUCE. The dairy maids were responsible for an interesting entry. The kindly advice given on previous occasions by one of the judges in regard , to pasteurising of : the cream, etc., had been followed with results in make and flavour which were regarded by the judge as first-class. Mrs W. Gordon, of Arthur's Point, was again prominent with her display of fancy butter. SUNDRIES. The constant stream of people passing through the sundries department proved what a,magnet it is to the show-coing public, • Indeed, it Ims become one of the important . features of the show. The cooks' of Lake County earned high praise from the judge on Wednesday when she said that nowhere in her experience had she met with culinary exhibits of such a .high standard. Mrs J. A. Bagrie (Lower Sitoloveri won the cup for most points in this section, Mrs J. Jenkins, last year's holder, being runner-up. THE COMPETITIONS. The programme of competitions arranged was a very interesting one, and though there were not large fiplds the riders as a whole gave fine exhibitions of clean jumping and clever horsemanship. The best lady rider proved to be Mrs J. S. Hunt, of Maungawera, with Miss Joan Scaife (Glendhu) second, and Miss M. Wright (Maungawera) third. Over the flights the first award went to Miss Mary M'Namee, of Garston", Miss Joan Scaife being runner-up. A field of seven faced the judges in the section, in which the equestrian skill of the sterner sex was tried out. W. E. Hazlett's Greenstone, ridden by Mrs M'Larcn, cleared the sticks with grace, and was awarded first prize. J. M'Laren's Gigho (Riverton) came second, and D. J. Jardine third. The high jump, which is always one of the star attractions, went to Stuart Middleton's Jimmy (14ft 9in), Gigha coming into

second place, with Greenstone next up. The placed amateurs in the flights were George Menlove (AthoD, W. Jolly (Tarias), and Arthur Burnett (Kingston) in the order iiamed. The motor car driving attracted a large number of entries, T. Johnston (Arrowtown) coming into first prize money, Mi'< Ken. A. Haggitt (" Bendemen," Arrowtown) lifting the second, and J. Davis (Queenstown). Steer-riding on Kawarau Falls Station back-country cattle afforded the spectators some real thrills, and the exhibition in general created a great deal of entertainment. The children on the celves also provided some entertainment, there being a number of boys and girls ready and anxious to show their prowess in this field of sport.
