LADIES' BOWLING

• SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY MRS AUSTIN The final game in the Ladies' Singles bowling championship was played yesterday at the Caledonian Club's green, when Mrs Austin (St. Clair) defeated Mrs Mehalski (Green Island). The green was in excellent order and both players were in good form with the result that play was of a particularly high standard throughout. Mrs Austin, who had previously met and defeated her opponent, commenced with two lives to Mrs Mehalski's one. Had the latter been successful in this game, each would have had one life and a further play-off would have been necessary. The game was won by Mrs Austin, however, by the narrow margin of two points, the scores being: Mrs Austin (St. Clair) .... 14 Mrs Mehalski (Green Island) 12 Mrs Austin .took one point on the first head and two on the second. At the third end, Mrs Mehalski opened her account with a single point, Mrs Austin securing one on the fourth head to make the score 4 —l. Mrs Mehalski gained two on the fifth head, but lost the next two and the seventh found the scores (5—3 in Mrs Austin's favour. Two points to Mrs Mehalski on the tenth head reduced her opponent's lead to one, but Mrs Austin won the next three to make the score 11—0. At this stage, Mrs Mehalski had a little the hotter of the play and increased her tally to eight on the' fifteenth, Mrs Austin reaching 12 on the following end. Mrs Mehalski added four points in the next three ends to make the score 12 all after the nineteenth end. On the twentieth Airs Mehalski sent up a line shot for a " toucher." but her opponent was equal to the occasion and gained one more point. With the score 13—12 at the commencement of the final head, both players did their utmost, and by good play Airs Austin was successful in winning the head and the game. TROPHY PRESENTED. At the conclusion of the game, the president of the Otago Ladies' Bowling Association, Mrs R Mullenger, congratulated Mrs Austin on the high standard of play she had shown and presented her with the silver rose bowl which is the trophy for the Singles championship. Mrs Mullenger also returned thanks to the Caledonian Club for the use of the green. Mrs Austin briefly replied, congratulating Mrs Mehalski on the good game she had played.
