NATIONAL WORKERS' MOVEMENT The general meeting of the Dunedin Central branch of the National Unemployed Workers' Movement was held in the Trades Hall on Tuesday evening. Cr M. Silverstonc presided over a large attendance of members. The secretary submitted the financial statement for February, which showed the organisation to be in a very satisfactory position, 58 members having joined during the month. A deputation was appointed to wait on the executive of the General Labourers' Union on Wednesday next, in an effort to come to some arrangement as to clearance cards for members of the N.U.W.M., Messrs G. Gcddes, W. Foote. J: Spence, and the secretary being the deputation. Complaints regarding wet weather and the shelter shed for the Bcthune's Gully iob were left in the secretary's hands to be dealt with. A complaint was also received as to wages to men unemployed under the U.B. scheme working on the railway, an 1 the secretary was instructed to take the matter up with tlie Minister of Bail ways (Mr D. G. Sullivan). The organising report was received, the secretary intimating that he attended the Town Hall on Wednesday, Thursday. Friday, and Saturday every week for the purpose of collecting contributions and enrolling new members. Mr A. M'Clure delivered a short address on the Unemployment and Public Works Department, pointing out the necessity of the N.U.W.M. working in conjunction with the New Zealand Workers' Union and the General Labourers' Union, nationally and locally. Political labour could not. do much unless industrial labour gave it the lead and backed it up when the struggle came. For effective industrial action, trade union unity was the first necessity, and so each union had now the prime duty of getting into the fight for nation-wide workingclass unity.
The subject to bo discussed at the next general meeting was tabled as follows: — " That the Labour Government should organise and recognise only one large industrial union of New Zealand workers."
