PALMERSTON Cricket The Macrae’s Flat cricket team travelled to Dunback on Saturday to play a match of the Eastern Districts inter-club competition. The visitors suffered defeat by 96 runs to 81. The Palmerston Club visited Waikouaiti. a very exciting game resulting, the match resulted in a draw, with 96 runs apiece. Lawn Tennis The local B Grade lawn tennis team was successful in beating the Dunback- team at Dunback by 11 sets to 3. Intermittent showers interrupted play repeatedly. Hospital Board The meeting of the committee of the Maniototo Hospital Board was held in Ranfurly on Monday last, and was attended by Messrs H. W. Davis (chairman), Robert Scott and P. Aitken. Dr Eudey also attended. A letter was received from the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union dealing with the question of tuberculosis among young probationary nurses, and asking for the board s cooperation to remove the cause of this trouble. It was resolved that the board co-operate as far ns it was possible to Numerous letters were received from the Wellington Hospital Board, Vincent Hospital Board, and Otago Hospital Board relating to the admission of patients from this district. The doctor reported that there wer» three males and eight females in the hospital at the date of the Inst return, anu four and 10 respectively had since been admitted, making 25 treated. Six males and 12 females were discharged during the month, leaving seven under treatment. Seven babies were born in the hospital during the month. The secretary reported that the total receipts for the month of February amounted to £5lB 15s sd, and that there was a debit balance in the general account as at the 2nd instant of £486 6s 9d. Accounts and salaries amounting to £369 16s 5d were passed for payment.

CROMWELL Rifle Shooting The weekly shoot, 10 shots at 500 and 600 yards, for a club trophy, was fired under very difficult conditions, with wind, rain showers and a varying light. Scores: —V. Ferris, a labourer, 25 years of age, was charged in the Cromwell Magistrate’s Court with, at Lindis Pass, carnally knowing a girl between 12 and 16 years of age. The accused pleaded guilty and was remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence, bail being allowed, self in £SO and one deposit of £SO. CLYDE School Picnic The annual picnic of the Clyde School, held at the Fraser River reserve on Friday, was a most enjoyable outing, young and old thoroughly enjoying themselves. Perfect weather enabled the school staff and committee to carry out the various sports provided, and the children returned at 5 p.m., laden with toys won throughout the day. Cricket At Clyde on Saturday afternoon the local team had a meritorious win against Alexandra B team, this being their seventh successive win. Clyde declared with 153 for seven wickets in the first innings, and with a few minutes to spare, had Alexandra’s wickets for 145. Caskie, who played good cricket, made top score with 57. M’AvOy (32) and M’Nish (32) n-reatly hcluing the total for Clyde. Bowling for Alexandra, Aitken took four for 47" Lees one for three, Fenwick one for 23! and Thompson one for 28. Alexandra’s leading bat was Fenwick (36), with Thompson (33), Wright (23), Gourley (15). and Aitken (14) all batting attractively. WANAKA The Weather Fine, hot days have been experienced in the Wanaka district during the past week, and although colder temperatures and frosts have been prevalent at night, these have been fully compensated for by the beautiful days that follow. Heavy snow fell on the mountain tops on Saturday night, and although Sunday was colder as a consequence, the barometer is still high, and the indications are that the good weather will continue. Fishing The fishing in the rivers and on the lake is still very good, and some exceptionally fine rainbow trout have been taken from the Clutha during the last week. Salmon have also been seen in the river at the outlet of Lake Wanaka. Personal Mr H. D. Beasley, of Liverpool, England, and Mr W. H. Campbell, of Catrine, Scotland, visited Lake Wanaka last week. Mis a T. Downy, of London, and Miss K. Orton, of Coventry, accompanied by Miss Til. L. Dickinson, of Christchurch, stayed in Pembroke for a few days. Mr and Mrs H. Blackwell, of Kaiapoi, were in Pembroke for a few days. Mr Blackwell is a keen fisherman, and intends returning to fish the rivers in this district on the journey back from SouthGeneral and Mrs F. Rowley, of Surrey, England, visited Wanaka again, and were entertained by relatives during their stay. Captain and Mrs Holland, of London, were guests at Wanaka Hotel last week. This is their second visit to Lake Wanaka. Colonel and Mrs T. W. Simpson, ot Fowey, in Cornwall, England, who are making a comprehensive tour of both islands, were in Pembroke for several days. Colonel Simpson visited the Clntha River and Lake Hawca during his fishing expedition. Miss Lloyd Williams, ot Bangor, Wales, visited Pembroke in the course of her Dominion tour. Dr and Mrs L. C. Talbot, of Timaru, were in Pembroke for three days last "mV and Mrs L. O. Leofc. of Colombo, Ceylon, were visitors to Lake Wanaka. M. Jean Thcvcnct and Mine. Thcvenct, of Brussels, Belgium, were guests at

the Wanaka Hotel during the week-end. M, Thevenet is an advocate for the Court of Appeal, in Belgium, and is very interested in New Zealand and the people. Mr and Mrs S. Wilkes, of Yonkerfi, New York, are staying at Lake Wanaka at present. . . „ ~ Dr C. M. Macknight, of Albury, New South Wales, and Mr and Mrs M. D. Tress and Mr S. C. MMillan (Gore). Cricket f The Eastern Southland Saturday cricket competition was concluded on Saturday when Celtic A defeated Mataura by four wickets, on the hostel grounds, Gore. The weather conditions were very unpleasant, several showers of rain falling during play. By defeating Mataura. Celtic A have now won the Saturday competition. Mataura batted first and compiled 132 (Townsend 26. Renshaw 11). Aguew secured five wickets for 38 runs, Celtic passed Mataura’s total with four wickets in hand (Southern 00. King 35. Williamson 17). Mur' ray one for 17. ALEXANDRA Caledonian Society The annual meeting of the Alexandra Caledonian Society was held on Thursday evening last, the president (Mr Henry' Hesson) presiding. The report and balance sheet showed that the society had had a very successful season. The annual meeting on New Year’s Day had proved a great success and was each year gaining in popularity. The society was very grateful to the large number of visiting athletes who had come from all over the province to be present at the meeting. A decided attraction this year was the appearance of a pipe band, the Palmerston Band having (then excellent service. The report conehided with a comprehensive vote of thanks to all who had assisted in any way to make the function the success it was. The finances of the society were sound, the credit balance standing at £8 8s lid, and £35 of last year’s accounts had been cleared up. The society was also in possession of an excellent set of equipment, the value of which could be estimated at £62. —The report was adopted.
