RIFLE SHOOTING

THE NATIONAL MEETING LEADERS FOR THE KING'S PRIZE (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON. March 8. High scores were plentiful in the first two matches of the Championship Belt series which were fired at the national rifle meeting at Trentham yesterday morning. These were one-range matches, each at 300 yards, and as a result of the day's shooting J. E. Farley (Wanganui) and R. C. Russell (Auckland) are the present leaders for the King's Prize, each with an a£gregate score of 97. The remaining practices in the service series were finished during the afternoon, and with the completion of these the service 50 to fire in the final match for the Service Championship wag compiled. The leading #lace in the 50 is occupied by A. R. Symonds (Okawa) with 163 out of ,a possible of 200. In the No. 3 Service Match, the first practice of which was fired on Friday, the marksmen had to fire application and snapshooting practices at 500 yards. The match was won by J. C. Feast (Greytown) with 91 out of a possible of 100. Concurrently with the service matches was fired the Champion Service Teams' Match. Almost perfect shooting conditions were experienced throughout the morning for the first of the matches counting for the King's Prize. The sun was behind the targets for the early part of the Canterbury Match, but the light caused the marksmen no serious trouble. Nine of them dropped one point only with their 10 shots at 300 yards, but P. B. Goldfinch (Karori) had the best bull finish and took first prize. By the time the Otago Match, which also called for 10 rounds at 300 yards, was due to commence the wind had freshened, but it blew steadily from the left and was easily readable. Two marksmen made possibles in this match and six finished with an " inner " on their cards. The Dawson Shield, which is awarded to the team of four men obtaining the highest score in the 300 yards rapid-fire practice of the service series, was won by the Opaki No. 1 team with an aggregate score of 135, out of a possible of 200. Auckland City occupied second place with 134.
