UPPER CLUTHA SHOW

AN UNQUALIFIED SUCCESS WIDE VARIETY OF EXHIBITS MORE THAN 2000 ENTRIES The Upper Clutha Agricultural and Pastoral Association is probably the youngest organisation of its kind m Otago, but already, at the end of its third year of operation, it has earned a high place among district shows in the province.

With more than 2000 catalogued entries this year, it reached what must be almost a record for the season for a county show. The exhibition embraces every aspect of live stock raising in the Lake County and Upper Clutha districts, and in addition includes almost every class of farm produce. Crops, fruit, vegetables, dairy produce, and the household crafts of baking, preserving, and needlework combined to make an outstanding display which reflected not only the fertility of the soil, but also the cunning of hundreds of hands, and the enthusiasm of the whole district. The Upper Clutha show i 9 a striking illustration of the results .that can be achieved by co-operative effort on a large scale. A big programme was disposed of with expedition, and to the satisfaction of everybody, and all the arrangements worked smoothly. This was due to the energy of a large band of marshals and stewards, under the direction of this year's president (Mr J. S. Hunt. Maungawera), and also in no small measure to the efficiency and diligence of the secretary (Miss K. Maira Wilson).

Few shows cover as wide a range in a single exhibition as the Upper Clutha

show, and many a show society in Otago would welcome not only the keen competition apparent in all classes on Saturday, but also the large attendance of district people and visitors, the latter including the members of the party of North Otago farmers who toured Central Otago last week, Recognition of the importance of this show was to be found in the large representation of motor car and machinery importers and manufacturers present this year, both Invercargill and Duiiedin being strongly represented. A large number of side-show marquees and stalls helped to fill the spacious show grounds, and lent colour and animation to the scene.

Though not the largest sections in tho «how, those devoted to live stock were well worth studying, the general standard of quality being excellent. Competition was keen, and outstanding merit was not lacking, particularly in the sheep and horse sections. Fruit, vegetables, gram, seeds, jams, preserves, and baking were shown in abundance, and the seasonal activities of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union were illustrated by a varied and interesting display. Among the features of the day's programme was a well-staged parade of prize-winning stock, which was followed by a series of competitions and rodeo events, which, besides providing excellent entertainment, were productive of a great deal of fine horsemanship. The steerriding events attracted keen competition, and provided good sport. On the wide, open spaces of Cattle Flat, the steers run Avild most of the year, and when penned at show time are in fine fettle. Competitors found this on Saturday. Actually, the _ term is a misnomer this year, and bovine mounts being young heifers from the Cattle Station, every one of which gave colour to the generally-expressed view that the female of the species has more "kick" and life in it than the male.

THE HORSES There was a well-mixed showing of draught horses, good active farm workers rather than breeders' stock* and the average throughout wag good. Mr D. C. Aubrey (Cattle Flat) won both the championships, most of his opposition coming from the Wanaka station of Sir Percy Sargood.

In the thoroughbred classes the principal prizewinners came from the Mount Barker stud of Mr John Faulks, whose most notable representatives were the sire Paper Money and the well-known dam Wanaka, both of which secured championships.

Keen competition was the feature of the light horse sections, where a lot of verv trood stock was shown. The Hack Championship was won bv Mr Dickson Jardine, of Kawarau Falls Station, Queenstown. The .Pony Championship went to Mrs J. S. Hunt. The class awards were widely distributed. The champion hack was seen to excellent advantage in the hunting competitions later m the day. winning both events. The two high jumps went to Mr R. Smith (1 arras) and Miss Joan Scaif'e (Glendhu Station) was adjudged the best lady rider, while Mrs Rose won the Ladies' Hunting Competition. CATTLE

The cattle classes were the least impressive of the live stock sections, but that is scarcely surprising in a district which rides almost entirely on the sheep's back. Sir Percy Sargood showed a nice bunch of fat cattle, but in the other sections entries were very few. Among the chief exhibitors were Messrs Thomas Smith (Wanaka Road), John Faulks (Mount Barker), W. A. Bovett (Pembroke) , John Bovett (Pembroke), and the Wanaka Station. I I THE SHEEP The sheep pens contained a lot of very fine stock, particularly in the fice-wool breeds, and competition was brisk. Several well-known flocks were represented in the merino sections, where quality was very good. Mr R. Jopp (Chatto Creek) was represented by some excellent sheep from his Moutere Station stud, including some notable recent importations. Messrs Hector Gibson (Tarras) and W. A. Scaife (Glendhu Station) were also prominent, showing some outstanding sheep. Messrs W. R. Gawn and Sons (Maungawera), D. H. Cockburn (Queenstown), and R. Jopp were the chief prize winners in the Romney section, and in the Down classes Mr J. S. Hunt (Maungawera) secured most of the awards. The Wanaka Station was well to the fore in the Corriedale section, with Mrs J.Kane (Hawea Flat), R. Jopp (Moutere), and J. S. Hunt also in the picture. Halfbreds, crossbreds, and fats also made a good showing. PRIZE LIST The following is the prize list:— HORSES DRAUGHTS. •
