An interesting day's racing at the Franklin meeting at Pukekohe to-dav culminated in a win for the rank outsider, Roman Mascot, who paid over half a centurv for a win and double figures for a place. Claiming a 51b apprentice's allowance, the topweight. Gay Defence, was made an each-way favourite for the Waiuku Hack Handicap, and he acted up to expectations bv winning nicelv. Ncaring the home turn. Gay Defence and Dancing Lady ran up on the outside of Gappy and Enlightenment, and Gav Defence then drew away to win by three lengths from Enlightenment. Cappy was a neck away third and Loombination was fourth, followed by Dancing Lady, Calcutta, Teddy Boy and Rings-hot. Gay Defence is splendidly fit and displayed definite superiority. The Avondale-traincd Sebrof, although third fancy on the win machine, scored at a good price in the Bombay Handicap, for which Mainland and Red Flame were the favourites. Red Flame, Sebrof, Stormy Weather and Mainland were quickly, prominent, Sebrof leading into the straight from Mainland, Red Flame. Solas, Wahineroa and Stormy Weather. In spite of the fact that he was boring away from the rails, Sebrof won easily from Mainland. Solas ran on better than usual for third, just outstaying Red Flame for the position. The winner is a fine upstanding four-year-old brother to Jaeldy Karo and Prince Lu, and has had very little racing. Although he was having his first race over fences, Huskie was made an eachway favourite for the Puni Hurdles, and he gave a line display to win handsomely., Huskie and Gascille cleared away in the middle stages, when Orenda and The Hiker were their closest attendants. Five furlongs from home Lap Up, who was a long way back, began to go after the leaders, and at the last fence he had drawn level with Huskie. However, the latter was going well and went away to score very convincingly from Lap Up. Gascille tired into third place, and The Hiker was fourth. Huskie fenced well lor a beginner and is a good huidler in the making. Showing' improvement upon her Te Aroha running, Lagoon won the Franklin Cup practically from end to end. Nun Nicer, Sinking Fund and Knight of Australia followed her closely in the first half of the journey, with Tahurangi and Miss Lu next. Entering the straight Lagoon was just clear of Sinking Fund, Nun Nicer, Miss Lu, Knight of Auatralia, Gay Broney, and Luge. Lagoon stayed on soundly and scored by three lengths from Sinking Fund. Enge ran on very strongly on the outside to get third, a length and a-half away, and Gay Broney was close up fourth, followed by Knight of Australia, Nun Nicer, Miss Lu. Flood Tide, and Velocipede. Lagoon ran right up to her best form, and sho is now very useful over middle although a little difficult to follow. Nun Nicer had every chance, only to fade at the end. The two-year-old Cheval-de-Colee made an auspicious debut when he won the Tuakau Stakes, for which Gay Streak and Marjory Daw were the favourites. Cheval-de-Colee led into the straight from Hohana, Gar Vaals, Marjory Daw, and Palardo. Once in line for the post Hohana challenged, but she had no chance with Cheval-de-Colee, who defeated her by three lengths. Gay Streak, who had anything but a good run, and was well back at the turn, finished fast on the outside for third, and Thangilamba was running on in fourth position, ahead of Gar Vaals and Lorita. The winner is it fine type of colt, and like most of the progeny of Vaals, he has good speed. It was a coincidence that Mr A. Rowan, who won the event last year with Tonnerre, another son of Vanls. should again have won with another unraced colt It was a further coincidence that E, A. Keesing was again the .successful rider. It was with a brilliant finishing run that Vera Acre scored in the 'Dynes Fulton Memorial Hack Cup. High Qualitv was squeezed back at the start, and the first to become prominent were Leo Colossus, Valise, Light Comedy, Tutor, and Loombination. Passing the six furlongs Valise was in charge, but a little further on Light Comedy was i» command, to be joined at the top by Valrent, who had run up very fast on the outside. Rounding the bend into th" straight Light Comedy and Valrent were the leaders from Loombination, Valise, Leo Colossus, Tutor, and Te Broney. Halfway down the straight, Light Comedy, although boring out badly, was in front, but Vera Acre came through very fast to win running away bv three lengths. Tutor was a neck away third, and King Tut was a close fourth. Vera Acre's victory was thoroughly deserved, but Light Comedy would have taken more beating with a stronger horseman. Valient was not well handled being rushed up on the outside in tho middle stages. Little Artist accounted lor, the Buckland Hack Handicap in good style. Triune unci Fleetwind made most of the running from Red Flame, and at the straight entrance they were the leaders, with Little Artist moving up on the outside, ahead of Profesiona] and Diacquedoon. Once in line for the post, Little Artist shot out and went on to win by a length and aquarter from Triune, who deteated Red Flame by a neck. Lord Willonyx was close up fourth, succeeded by Diacquedoon, Professional, and Calshot. Roman Mascot was responsible lor a surprise in the Pukekohe Handicap. Boughal was quickly in the lead from Mungacre, Crooning. Roman Mascot. Wahine Reihi. and Tin Lap. Entering the straight. Boughal and Mungacre led from Tin Lap and Roman Mascot. As thev straightened up. Mungacre appeared likely to win, but Roman Mascot finished strongly on the inside to beat him by half a'length. Gay Broney (lashed up on (he outside with a brilliant burst at the end to be a neck away third, and Tin Lap was fourth, followed by Wahine Reihi and Boughal.
