MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Maniototo County Council was held in the County Chambers, Nasebj', on February 28, when there were present: Crs P. Ait ken (chairman), W. Howell, R. Scott, E. Morgan, N. Nicolson, T. A. Lowis, J. B. M'Gill, H. W. Davis, and Thomas Flail. On the motion of the chairman, a vote of sympathy was extended to Cr Nicolson and family in their recent bereavement. CORRESPONDENCE. The secretary of the Local Government Loans Board, Wellington, wrote advising that the amount of the loan could be completed on receipt of advice of the amount of the tender the council proposed to accept. The board also advised the council not to accept the tender until the Orderin Council was issued.—Received. Mr T. M. Ball, No. 16 District Highways Council, Duncdin. forwarded a copy of Gazette declaring the Oturehua-Black-fctono Hill road to be a main highway as from December 19, 1935. —Received The chairman of the Main Highways Board, Wellington, wrote advising that the board was prepared to assume responsibility for tvaflic inspection throughout rural highways and roading systems without cost to county councils. He asked whether the Maniototo County Council favoured the proposal.—Consideration was deferred to the next meeting. The district engineer, Public Works Department, Duncdin, wrote stating that a grant of £25 —£ for £ —had been authorised for effecting improvements to the Ranfurlv Aerodrome —The clerk was instructed to reply that the council reel etted that, it was unable to take advantage of the Government's offer. The medical officer of health, Dunedin, wrote asking the council to consider plans for the future drainage of Ranfurly township and the public water supply, together with the necessity for giving attention to the immediate abatement of the nuisance in the drain fronting the residence by piping the drainage to the stream six chains distant, provided such action does not conflict with proposals for comprehensive drainage of the township.—The clerk was instructed to advise that the engineer's report covering a water supply and drainage for the whole of the township would be considered at the next meeting, which would be held on March 20 next. |

The medical officer of health, Dunedin, wrote asking the council formally to appoint Mr S. C. Wells, inspector of health, Alexandra, as sanitary inspector.—Agreed to. The Commissioner of Transport, Wellington, wrote stressing the desirability of every effort being made to reach some agreement amongst the local authorities concerned before having recourse to the final step of having the heavy traffic fees in No, 16 District apportioned by the Minister.—lt was decided that the clerk submit a report to next meeting showing the council's position. The Waipiata Sanatorium Committee, Invercargill, wrote requesting that improvements be effected to the surface of the road between Waipiata township and the Sanatorium. —It was decided that the Sanatorium Committee be advised that the council was renewing the application to have the road from the junction of the Waipiata-Styx main highway to the sanatorium declared a main highway, and would appreciate any action the committee might take with the object of furthering the council's application. The Ranfurly Cemetery Trustees, Ranfurly, wrote recommending the appointment of Mr Hugh Kearney in place of Mr John Kearney, deceased.—Agreed to. Messrs Bodkin and Sunderland, solicitors, Alexandra, applied for a refund of rent in respect of ordinary prospecting licences numbers 5570, 5571, and 5572 in the name of Charles Edward Richards, Naseby registry, the amount involved being £8 12s Id. —It was resolved that if legally entitled to do so, the council refund the amount claimed. Mr W. Mann and others wrote asking that the council consider a scheme to supply some six or eight heads of water from the Shag River for the purpose of irrigating some 1200 acres at Kokonga. The applicants asked that the county engineer be allowed to carry out a preliminary survey and prepare plans.—Following discussion, it was resolved that, owing to pressure of work, the application be declined. The engineer was instructed to have a Rhort length of gravelling done on the Linnburn side of the Loganburn Ford road and some grading near Manson's. Authority was given for 30 chains of the Eweburn Back road to be gravelled. It was left to Cr Hall and the engineer to arrange for 20 chains of gravel on the Pukctoi-Patearoa road and to have the small bridge from Hamilton's re-erected at Stony Creek on the Puketoi-Linnburn road. It was decided that the offer of £8 for the old grader trailer be accepted and that the Horseburn boundary bridge

be inspected by the chairman, Crs Howell and Scott, and the county engineer, a report to be furnished to next meeting. The matter of disposing of an old horee grader was left in the hands of Cr Howell and the engineer to arrange. The clerk made application, in terms of sub-section (b) of section 193 of the Counties Act, 1020, to enable the erection of a dwelling in Ranfurly consequent upon the county office being removed to Ranfurly.—The clerk briefly outlined the proposal, stating that the instalments paid by him would cover the cost of interest and repayments of a loan.—Following discussion, the application was eventually declined by five votes to four. GIMMERBURN RESERVE. It was moved by Cr Hall that tenders, closing in time for the April meeting of the council, be invited for a lease of the Gimnierburn reserve for a term of five years from May 1, 1930, tenderers to deposit six months' rent with tender Carried. It was decided that the clerk write and notify the present lessee that any ground broken up during his occupnney must be sown down in grass before the present lease expires. TENDERS. The tender of T. Carruth at £582 15s 6d was accepted for contract No. 249, and the tender of M'Ncilly and Ball at £309 10s was accepted for contract No. 257. FINANCE. Accounts comprising vouchers Nos. 7011 to 7088, inclusive, being unemployment £767 19s 8d and County Fund £1274 4s, were passed for payment. It was decided that the special bank account required in connection with the i County Chambers loan be opened with I the Ranfurly branch of the Bank of Now ! South Wales, and that any two councillors and the treasurer be empowered to . sign cheques.
