A MUNICIPAL ORCHESTRA?
TO THE EDITOR Sir,— ln.a letter signed by “Orchestral Enthusiast,” which appeared in this morning's issue, is the following statement: — "There is room for only- one first-class orchestra in Dunedin, and to win public support to-day an orchestra must be formed of competent players and be conducted by a man of experience.” All music lovers will surely agree with that statement, just as competent musicians, overseas as well as New Zealanders, agree that Dunedin already possessess a first-class combination in its Symphony Orchestra, which is so, ably led by a most competent and talented musician. The merits of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and the musical culture of Dunedin arc already recognise i throughout the Dominion, per . medium ‘of its broad-
casts, and , this organisation has won through without any subsidy from civic authorities. YUv I agree Avith Orchestral -Enthusiast that public support id the key to success, and suggest that musical merit will eventually gain the success that is its dues. — I am, ,etc., Orchestral Player.
