Tarrant's Australian team to-day commenced a four days' match against an Indian eleven. The weather was ideal and the wicket in excellent order. India scored 149 (Wazirali 76: Leather 3 for 38/Nagel 4 for 73, Mair 2 for 8). Tarrant's team, in their first innings, made 106 (Ryder 21, Macartney 34, Leather not out 27; Nissar 4 for 72, Baqajilani 2 for 45, Amirelahi 3 for 15). India, in their second innings, have lost three wickets for 177 (Baqajilani 25, Banerji 70, Wazirali not out 84). "ONLY A SECOND TEAM" LONG LIST OF DEFECTIONS CALCUTTA, January 11. (Received Jan. 12, at 7.15 p.m.) The Indian team for the All-India match which commenced yesterday wan weakened by the refusal or inability of the following players to participate:—O. EC. Nayudu, who claims he needs a rest: Pataudi, who alleged illness; Amarnath, who alleged injuries; Amarsingh, who gave no reason; Merchant, who allege.! injuries; Nazir Ali, who was reported to have been bitten by a mad dog; Jai. who was unable to get leave; and Lali Singh, who gave no reason. As a resulr Wazirali is leading practically a second team. The critics express the opinion that Indian cricketers fear to risk further spoiling their reputations by failures against Ryder's men, who are doing much better here than Jardine's team did with several of England's best. India has gained a wholesome respect for Australian cricket, but the object of the present tour—to help the Indian selectors choose a side to visit England in the summer—it not likely to be attained.
