STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS MATHIESON'S FINE PERFORMANCE JARVIS NOT PROMINENT '(United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) SYDNEY, January 12. (Received Jan. 12, at 6.30 p.m.) In a magnificent struggle at the Domain Baths in the 110 Yards Championship of New South Wales, W. Kendall retained the title and lowered his own State record, which is also the best by any Australian swimmer, by twofifths of a second. Kendall's performance was all the more meritorious because he was somewhat slow entering the water.

Jarvis was unable to maintain the pace set by the leaders. On the international rule of technicality Mathieson was deprived of the Australian record in the 220 Yards Invitation Backstroke'Handicap, although he improved the previous figures by three seconds.

Mathieson on his handicap was sent away at the call of 17. To have qualified for the record he should have been given a call of " Go." His time was 2min 38 l-ssec, the Australian record being 2min 41 l-ssec, held by Kiyakawa, of Japan. Results: —

MATHIESON'S RECORD AN UNEXPECTED FEAT AUSTRALIAN OPINION OF PERFORMANCE SYDNEY, January 12. (Received Jan. 12, at 7.15 p.m.) Commenting on Mathicson's performance yesterday, the Sunday Sun says: " Had' it been anticipated that he would have broken the record the starter's call could have been altered from ' Seventeen' to 'Go,' and Mathieson would have been entitled to the record. The officials were as regretful as the spectators that the well-liked New Zealand lad could not return to his homeland with the distinction of having eclipsed the record theoretically as well as actually." NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIPS SYDNEY, January 12. (Received Jan. 12, at 7.15 p.m.) The Australian freestyle champion, Miss Pat Norton, provided something of a surprise at the Coogee Aquarium when she convincingly beat Miss Bonnie Mealing in the 100 Yards Backstroke Championship of New South Wales in lmin 14 4-ssec. Miss Kitty Mackay easily won the 440 Yards Championship in 6inin 11 4-ssec, beating Miss Joan Davies by five yards. _^________
