QUEENSTOWN A cold snap has been experienced during the week-end. On Sunday, and Monday nights rain fell, accompanied by a powdering of some of the distant ranges with snow. The days in between have been fine, but naturally the temperatures have been lower. Obituary The death took place at the Southland Hospital on Friday last of Miss Adelaide Jane Lewis, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. J. H. Lewis, of Long Gully, following on a short illness. Miss Lewis went to Dunedin about three weeks ago on a short visit, and then going on to Invercargill. On the day she was to return home she became indisposed, and medical advice was summoned. Double pneumonia and pleurisy were diagnosed, and her condition rapidly became serious. Grave complications supervened, and she passed away a few days later. Miss Lewis was born in the district, and was educated at the Arthurs Fomt and Queenstown Schools. She was a young women of tall build and excellent physique, who engaged in sport of various kinds Chief among these was riding, her equestrian skill being well known. She was a regular competitor at the Lake County A. and P. shows and won several trophies in the ring. V 1 } 6 these was the Cardhu Cup, or which she became owner through her successes over the hurdles in 1931. 1933. and 1934. In 1930 she won the silver cup given by Mr Charles Sutherland, Dunedin, for the best lady rider over flights, and in the previous year she qualiUcd for the whip donated by the Wakatipu Riding Club for the lady gaming most points in the jumps. The deceased was a prominent member of this club. Miss Lewis’s talents were not confined to held sports; her versatility was proved in her efficiency in the home, where she excelled in all branches of housekeeping. . bne also assisted her father in his business. In fact, she could turn her hand to almost anything. Her death at the early age of 26 years has come as a great blow to her parents and relatives, and is deeply regretted by a very large circle of friends. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon, when the remains were interred in the Queenstown Cemetery, the Rev. W. W. Powell, of St. Peter s, conducting the services m the church and at the graveside. Girl Guides The Queenstown Girl Guides celebrated the second birthday of the company on Friday last. The celebration was actually six months overdue, as it had not been convenient to hold the party on the due date. The local Brownies, who have seen one year of service, combined with the Guides in making merry, and a memorable time was spent. The birthday party, which was arranged by the committee (Mrs I. Hunter president; Mrs O. E. Clayton, secretary), commenced with high tea, this taking place in the Parish Hall. . A feature of the occasion was the cutting of the big iced birthday cake —the KiH °£ In carrying out this ceremony Mrs Hunter wished the two companies many happy returns, and expressed the hope that the ensuing year would be one of pleasure and profit to the girls. Miss I. Liddell, captain of the Guides, also spoke, thanking the committee for their great .kindness in entertaining the girls eo lavishly, also for the practical interest they had taken in their activities during the yeai ; “ For They Are Jolly Fine Ladies was then sung with much enthusiasm, Ine service stars earned by Guides with a 75 per cent, attendance during the year were subsequently presented. Qualifying for these were Mona Indie, Margaret Miles, Irene Buckham, beryl Robins, Beath Gray, Norma Robins, Doreen Buckham, Vera Davis, Betty Hales, and Violet R Tbe of enrolment of Mona Battin and Kathleen Coutts was the next ceremonj, followed by the investiture of three leiders M Miles, V. Davis, and I. Buckham! A very enjoyable programme was then presented to an appreciative audience. Wakatipu Collie Club The annual meeting of members of the Wakatipu Collie Club was held at Arrowtown on Saturday evening, Mr D. claims during the past few days. Yesterday the Golden Arrow Mining Company had a record wash-up—namely, 118 oz 16dwt for four weeks’ elevating. The Junction Reward Company waeheJ up 420 z for three weeks’ elevating. Skippers, Ltd., report 120 oz, and Central Shotover, which had a considerable setback with floods smashing up the plant, is now getting on its feet again, and recently showed a good return. The Sandhills Company also recently brought a nice packet of gold down. At the Crystal quartz mine Mr J. R. Tripp is making most satisfactory headway, and is understood to have retorted something of a particularly payable nature. Personal Mr and Mrs D. M. Scandrett arrived here from Invercargill on Sunday evening on a short holiday visit. They are accompanied by their son Jack and daughter Jean. , The Rev. W. W. Powell, vicar of ot. Peter’s, Queenstown, who is spending his holidays in Dunedin, paid a visit to the district at the week-end on urgent parish business. n Mrs E. C. Smith has returned to Gore after spending a couple of weeks in Queenstown sketching. Mr F. W. Bailey, postmaster, is away on his annual holidays. Mr and Mrs James Hislop, of Dunedin, are visiting Queenstown. Miss Lois White was a passenger to Dunedin on Tuesday morning. Mrs E. J. Hawke, Queenstown, is visiting her brother-in-law and sister, Mr and Mrs George Curie. Mrs Riwi Kingsland, of Invercargill, and her small daughter are staying with friends here.

TEMUKA Lake Alexandrine The season for trout fishing in Lake Alexandria was opened on November.!, and for the purpose of giving the locality a try-out a small party of anglers visited the Mackenzie Country last week. At the time of their vsiit there were about 30 fishermen on the lake. Some fair-sized fish were taken, the quota of the Temuka visitors numbering three.
