RACING NEWS

By Sentinel.

Fracas Fracas is said to have been improved as a result of her racing at Trenthara. Silver Streak There is a probability that B. H. Morris will have the mount on Silver Streak in the Stewards’ Handicap. A False Pace Although Sylvandale did not win the Melbourne Cup he at least proved that the Kandwick Plate was a false run race. Jonathan It is understood that an Australian owner has an idea of buying Jonathan if a deal can be made. Some Stake The largest stake attached to the Melbourne Cup is £13,288, of which £10,288 went to the winner. A Wingatui Prospect High Glee wag! unable to race at Trentham owing to an attack of kidney trouble. He; is all right now ? and he may be seen to advantage in his Riccarton engage■ments. ■ Running Wide

Voitre appears to have kept Marabou on the outside of the field in the run for the Melbourne Cup to avoid risk of interference. Evidently there was more merit in the win thdn what appears on the surface.

Argentic What is considered one of the best lines to Argentic’s chance in the New Zealand' Cup is_ the performance he put up in the Wellington Cup of 1934. He covered a lot of ground on the outside of the field, and then finished close to the placed lot. Former , Stable Mates • The New Zealand Cup candidate Fersen was at one time a stable mate of Marabou, , the winner of the Melbourne Cup. Fersen was being’ trained by L. Robertson for. his breeder, Mr S. Green, when 0. Cox secured, him a year ago for his New Plymouth patron, Mrs W. D. Graham. , - , i The Tracery Sire Line , The result of the Melbourne Cup was a triumph for the Tracery sire line. In addition *to the winner, it was represented by the runner-up, Sarcherie, whose sire, Archery, is by Tracery from Port Sunlight, by Sundridge from Wife of Bath, a sister to Chaucer and a half-sister to Swynford, sire of Blandford, also of Iliad. In France

The Paris correspondent of the Horse an£ Hound (London) is not optimistic regarding the future of racing in France. He says the French, public is taking less and less interest in racing, and consequently attendances are falling off. Now that they can do their pari-mutuel betting without going to the races, thousands are consent; to. stay -away. . ’,

Carrying Overweight It is understood that J. W. Jennings is to ride Kemal Pasha in the New Zealand Cuq, in which the Gay Shield gelding’s weight is 7.3. Jennings went to Gore to ride Viking at 7.5, but in his natural garb was unable to make less than 7.8. Kemal Pasha has gone well for Jennings this season, but five or sis pounds extra will not help him to win a Cup. Expecting Too Much Vintage has not had a race since last March, and he has not, been subjected % to a hard Gup preparation, a doubtful ligament having made his trainer cautious. To win a Cup with 9.5 a horse requires to be thoroughly sound and fit, and, good as Vintage is, despite his Victorian failure, it seems almost too much to expect him to give 201 b. to the horses nearest to him in the acceptance list. Th« Pupil Paying Some Melbourne and Sydney trainers are.'.desirous that they should receive a percentage of the riding fees of their apprentices. A; deputation _ recently waited on the V.R.C. committee, and asked that a rule to that effect should be incorporated in the Australian Rules of Racing. At present a percentage from apprentices’ earnings can be managed by private arrangement by their parents. In, reply the V.R.C. chairman, Mr H. ■ Alan .Currie, said the suggested amendment to the rules would receive consideration at the annual conference of the principal racing clubs during Melbourne Cup week..

Lady Owner Passes An Auckland exchange announces the death at Waihou of Mrs Sarah Ann Leonard, who had reached her eighty-third year. She was among the very earliest lady owners to race horses in the Dominion, nearly all of them of her own breeding. Among her chief succei*;es were the Great Northern Derby of 1896 with Fabulist, and the Auckland Cup of 1910 with Waimangu, and that of 1911 with Santa Rosa. All three were in her ownership at the time of those successes, though the first and last-named ran later in other colours. • Of all the deceased lady’s horses her favourite was the bonny mare Vieux Rose, whose descendants arc even now being raced by one of Mrs Leonard's' sous.

Great Riding Record Keith Voitre, who topped off a great record by riding Marabou to victory in the Melbourne Cup, served his apprenticeship with the Awapuni trainer, R. E. Hatch, himself a good horseman, who later developed a faculty for imparting In’s knowledge of the game to his apprentices. Voitre, after making a name in the Dominion, shifted to Melbourne early this year, and since then his career has been a scries of triumphs. He was a success from the first meeting at which

he rode, and he has. kept on riding winners ever since. His success in important Australian events has been phenomenal. He started off in the autumn by riding Synagogue-in his dead heat in the Caulfield Futurity. Stakes. Next came the Newmarket Handicap on . Count ltd, followed by the Doncaster Handicap on Hall Mark. This season he went to Sydney again to win the Epsom Handicap on Synagogue, while the Victoria Derby on Feldspar and the Melbourne Cup on Marabou have placed him on a pinnacle.
