PRAYERS FOR PEACE

THE POPE'S APPEAL BROADCAST TO CONGRESS (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) VATICAN CITY. October 27. Speaking with great emotion, tic Pope, in the course of a broadcast to the Peruvian Eucharistic Congress, invited all mankind to join in prayers for universal peace and a reign of Christian love, especially in Europe and Africa, where peace was already disturbed and in danger of suffering greater breaches. "Let us pray for peace, founded on justice and not bereft of truth and charity."

His Holiness, interviewed by Mr Edward Price Bell, a well-known jo-rnal-ist, author and lecturer, declared: " I cannot believe that any civilised State will become so monstrously murderous, and almost certainly suicidal, as deliberately to provoke another world war." Asked if such a nation . existed, the Pope answered: " Then we turn to God with inspired prayers to scatter those nations delighting in wars." Questioned concerning armaments, his Holiness indicated that their only honourable and virtuous function was to preserve law and order and shield civilisation against the destruction, ignominy, and anguish of war, "We must join charity and justice and even ir.ake charity prevail over justice, and thus achieve political nnd industrial harmony. Save the individual anC you save the race."
