The North Canterbury Racing Club held a successful meeting to-day. The conditions were pleasant up to the last two races, when light rain fell just to maintain the usual Labour Day experience. Tail Light, a hot favourite, was not the good thing for the High-weight Handicap the betting suggested, as lie only scrambled home from the fast-finishing Polygraph, who should win soon. Rose of Tralee stayed too well for the others. Honour's Lass, the four-year-old sister to Grey Honour, slipped the field halfway through the Trial Plate and won easily. She is very speedy, and may win more races for Cotton's stable, though she may never stay. Rival Shot easily beat Princess Rawene for second, owing her place to saving ground at the home turn, where several horses ran wide. All the same Rival Shot is worth keeping in mind. This was her first race, and she is a good sort likely to win races for Sir Charles Cilfford before long. Malvasia was one of the sufferers at the home turn, and another was Whaddon Chase. The promising gelding M'Heath was one of the leaders all the way in the Raugiora Handicap. Rose Val and Sky Rover followed him most of the way, while Sisterina, Girl Guide, and Chidden were handy half a mile from home. Then Sisterina and Girl Guide dropped out, Rose Val following suit when the straight was reached. Chidden made a good effort, but

was beaten 50 yards from the post, and M'Heath hung on to head Sky Rover by half a length. M'Heath's performance looked a good one. The View Hill Trot was a good race. Zest and Hidden Charm were in front when the field settled down. Coral Prince. Monetary, Slippery Sam, and Moana Tama being handy half a mile Iroin home. Monetary tangled in the straight, and Hidden Charm won decisively from Moana Tama, who beat Zest on the post. Slippery Sam and Coral Prince were closo up. Riposte set a strong pace in the Oxford Hack Handicap, but retired quickly in the straight. Invoice was never further back than third, and went on in the straight to win easily. It was overdue, but others may follow soon. Celerrimus, from the Cheviot district, was always well placed, and just stalled Note Issue on. Dover Patrol. Top Rank and Orris were next, with no excuses for defeat. There was ah exciting finish in the open'handicap. Capital set a strong pace, being well clear of Courtyard and Knockfin at the entrance to the straight, with Quietly handy. Knockfin then retired, a disappointing effort for a hot favourite. Courtyard went after Capital, while Polydora, ' after tailing the field early, came with a brilliant run, beating Courtyard by half a head, with Capital a head away. Polydora's performance looked good, as she came home gamely. Grand Review and Silver Jest were in front most of the. way in the Fernside Hack Handicap. Riptide, after being last earlv. finished strongly, failing to catch Grand Review by a neck, while Silver Jest was a length away. Latitude, the. favourite, was running in fourth place, but never looked like being in the money. The Ashley Trot provided a great finish. Coral Prince took charge six furlongs from home, Slippery Sam and Thornworthv being his nearest attendants a furlone further on. Coral Prince just failed, Slipnerv Sam getting up on the post to beat him by a head, with Thorn worthy a neck away. The favourite. Zest, failed to co off right. Midshipmaid was prominent early, but then drifted. He finished fast; however, for fourth. GIESEKING HANDICAP. Cottesmore Breaks Down Cottesmore, who has been a doubtful case for over a month past, broke down when being tried out on Thursday, and a long spell, ■ perhaps a permanent one, will now be necessary for him. Cuddle's Probable Pilot Mr R. J. Murphy hopes to have the services of L. J. Ellis for Cuddle in the New Zealand Cup next month, Rerepai on Easy List Rerepai is still on the easy list as a result of the soreness he developed on the eve of the recent spring meeting at : Ellerslie. The halt in his preparation was unfortunate, because he had been doing well and giving indications that he was about to show some form. Rerepai is recovering, but yet remains a trifle tender. Out for a Spell The two-year-old King Neptune, by Tidal from Queen March, who developed eorness recently, is not to be persevered with for the present, and he is to be turned out for a lengthy spell. King Neptune is owned by the Hon E. R. Davis and Mr O. Nicholson, who have not had the best of luck with their horses for some months past. A Bargain Missed A bargain was missed when the Tippler —Joan Clare filly was, after bidding had stopped at 220 guineas, allowed to leave the ring at the Sydney yearling sales at Easter without having changed hands. Racing last Wednesday week for the first time, the youngster, now known as Spirits, registered an impressive win in the A.J.C. Gimcrack Stakes, first prize for which is £IOOO. That Spirits is galloping fast so early in her career is not at nil surprising. Her dam is a daughter of The Welkin, her sire is noted for the speed of his two-year-olds, and, furthermore, she is a full sister to Malvina, who showed the way home in the Gimcrack Stakes of 1928. Malvina carried the colours of Mrs Hunter White, wife of the well-known breeder, whereas Spirits is being raced on lease by Randwiek trainer Jack King, whose colours were carried to victory in the Metropolitan by Oro, another of Mr White's breeding. The Gimcrack Stakes, a race for fillies, was generally regarded as a " fair thing" for the Rosehilltrained Retrieved, a Limond youngster, for whom Mr Ezra Norton paid 300 guineas at the New Zealand sales. Backers of the favourite were in high glee until the last of the five furlongs was entered upon. Retrieved began smartly from a position towards the outside of the field, turned for home sharing the lead with Peg's Pet, and approached the distance in sole control and with the race apparently in her keeping. Then Spirits loomed up en the outside and changed the whole complexion of the race. In the words of tiie stewards, the daughter of Tippler reared at barrier rise and was slow to get going, and, so far was she from the leaders when the field settled down, little hope of her scoring was entertained by those observing the running at all closely. Even as the field began to run home Spirits' chance looked anything but bright, but the attractively-built brown responded well to her rider's urging and came on to win from Retrieved by half a length. A French Sensation The " phantom " horse Ecureuil V, who last year was substituted for the horses Hallencourt and Hanoi, and subsequently became the subject of an important trial for turf frauds, has just been discovered running under a new name and to have had his back dyed (says a Paris report of September 10). After creating one of the biggest French turf scandals, Ecureuil V disappeared in the south of France and was forgotten. French C.I.D. officers have now established that the horse ran on the Paris trotting track of Vincennes on September 5 under the name of Giuseppe and won a second prize of about £SO. Suspicions were aroused because of the heavy betting on Guiseppe, who was said to be a horse with a poor record in the south of France, and had been regarded by manv as an outsider. The C.I.D. officials investigated, and seized the supposed Guiseppe. A witness stated that he saw the horse's back being dyed, but when part of Ecureuil V's brown mane was shaved off it was found to be white under? neath. M. Deluy. the owner, who comes from the south of France, is stated to have had in his possession a recipe for dyeing horses. Just over two months ago seven men were sent to prison at Pontorose, after Ecureuil V. believed to be a horse named Hallencourt. won a second-class race, enabling several people to win bets amounting to £0750. When the judges asked to see the horse after the race it had disappeared, and was found between a donkey and a sheep in a stable. Haka Out of Luck Sir Joseph Robinson's New Zealand purchase The Haka (Lord Qucx—Dominant) failed only by a short head to win the King's Plate, two miles, at lie-nil-worth. (South Africa) last month, and as the winner (Paul Pry) had seriously interfered with him after going half a mile, sending him back to last, he was probably most unlucky not to succeed. The race was run at weight for age reduced 10lb. In a description of the race the Cape Times says that Paul Prv, never an easv horse to keep to a straight course, nearly had The Haka over the fence _opposite the members' enclosure, the New Zealandcr dropping back to last. At the mile post Paul Pry was three or four lengths clear of his field, and he continued to draw a way. Approaching the straight the issue looked all settled, but suddenly The Haka shot out in pursuit and a furlong from home he was on terms. Here Paul Pry edged over towards The Haka. and. mindful no doubt of his experience earlier in the race, the latter turned his head and made a crab at Paul Pry. This undoubtedly cost The Haka the race, for in a desperate close finish Paul Pry won by a short head. This was the second vcar in succession that Paul Pry had

won the King's Plato for Mr E. 11. Howes. In a bumping finish 12 months ago he beat Rio bv a head and he survived the objection that was subsequently laid.
