WELLINGTON, October 28. The Wellington Racing Club was again very unfortunate with the weather for the spring meeting, and heavy rain fell during the morning and continued right through the day. Nevertheless, a large attendance turned out to witness the racing. The bad weather spoilt what would have otherwise been a highly si'.jessful meeting. The starting was satisfactory except for the fact that despatches should not be changed from flat loot to occasional snap starts as a field walks in. Red Sun was taken out of the Rona Hurdles, for which Arctic Star, Monastic, and Black Duke were evenly backed. Count Roussillon dropped his rider 20 yards past the first hurdle after striking. Isms, led Arctic Star, with the others handy, to the six-furlong post. Arctic Star then went to the front. Esteem appeared to have a, chance at the second last hurdle, where Monastic had moved up. Arctic Star came on and won by four lengths from Monastic, who beat Black Duke by a length. Esteem was next. The Spring Trial Stakes was a good betting race, in which Top Coat, Entheos, Lady Graceful, and Calshot were evenly backed. 11 Duce began well and led to the far turn, where Top Coat ran into second place, with Lady Graceful next. Calshot and- Lowenberg were handy. Top Coat joined II Duce coming to the straight, and they showed the way to Lady Graceful, with Lowenberg and Calshot closing up. Lowenberg ran past the leaders and won by two lengths from II Duce, who beat Top Coat by half a length. Calshot wae third, and Lady Graceful dropped back to fifth, with The Image next. Top Coat failed to stay on, and the winner • scored with a good deal in hand. They concentrated principally on Shu and Grey Honour for the Tararua Handicap. The early leaders were Shu, Master Reynard, Acceptablo, and Going Gay. Grey Honour had dropped back to second last at the far turn, where Acceptable and Master Reynard went on from Shu and Going Gay. Shu closed on the leaders coming to the distance, and under pressure came on to win by 'two lengths and a-half from Master Reynarc}, who beat Grey Honour by two lengths. Commotion, Going Gay, and Round Score were next. Grey Honour ran a good race to make up a lot of ground and finish in a place. Paper Slipper, Notium and Kow Tow were most in demand for the Roseneath Handicap. Kow Tow gave a good deal of trouble at the post and finally got out in front of Paper Slipper, Notium and Dawning Light. Once in the straight Kow Tow, Paper Slipper, Dawning Light and Notium had drawn clear from the rest of the field. In the run to the post Paper Slipper outstayed Dawning Licht and won bv less than a length. Kow Tow finished two lengths away, with Notium. Amount and Siegmund next. Farmer, Big Dook, Wino, Fersen and Sweet Agnes were the early leaders in the Pearce Handicap, with Arctic King at the tail of the field. Farmer and Big Dock were joined by Wino coming round Ihe top. and then Sweet Agnes and West Tor moved up. Sweet Agnes took charge shortly after straightening for home and finally won all out by half a length from West Tor, who beat Sunee by a length. Fersen was a head away fourth, with Arctic King. Wino and Fracas next. Argentic, Vintage, Heritage and Superex were taken out of the Harcourt Stakes. They got away to a snap start, and KinuouU lost three lengths. Plato got away w.ell and led along the back from Cuddle and Spiral, and then Rompalong joined the leader. Kinnoull was still last at the far turn, but then made a rapid move and joined the leaders before reaching (he straight. Kinnoull was in charge coming to the distance, and coming along won by three lengths from Cuddle, who beat Plato by two lengths. Greek Shepherd was a head away fourth. Kinnoull csfablished himself as the beat three-year-old of the season, and would have been harder to beat on a firm track. Silver Streak, Midian and Dollar Bill dropped out of the Nainai Handicap. Variant and Guarantee were the popular picks. Bodyline and Fair Weather began well and led Hunting Lodge to the turn, witli Variant and Guarantee in behind them. Fair Weather took charge and led into the straight. He came on to win by over two lensrths from Hunting Lodge, who beat Variant by three lengths. Guarantee was close up fourth,' with Princess. Doreen, after bein<r last'into the straight, finishing fifth. Fair Weather was evidently improved a ereat deal by his first race at the meeting. ■ Thev went off to a snap start in the Rualiine Handicap, from which Valarth and Mount Val were amongst, the last to leave. Windward made the early running from Confiscation,' Dorado and Hunting Cat. with Valarth and Mount Val moving up. The field closed up in the r «n up the straight, but both Valarth and Mount Vol weakened, and Huntina Cat won by a head from Windward, who beat Ayresleigh by a nbort neck. Taumau, Umpire, Valarth and Mount Val were next. NOTES FROM MELBOURNE (United. Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) MELBOURNE. October 28. OAMARU TROTS BRILLIANT WIN BY INDIANAPOLIS BIG HANDICAP TO GRAHAM DIRECT The jubilee spring meeting of the Oamaru Trotting Club was marked by a success fitting the occasion. The weather was fine, the track in splendid order, and the racing always interesting. Moreover, there appeared to be something like a record attendance. Indianapolis gave a most impressive display in the Weston Handicap, and his performance will cause him to start at a short price in the New Zealand Trotting Cup. The champion, on 60 yards behind, went out smartly, and with Roi l'Or, off 84 yards, was eoon at the tail of a bunched field. Racing into the straight for the run home Indianapolis and Roi l'Or were last, but Mr Barton's horse then put in a great run, and was with the leaders 50 yards from the post. Running as straight as the proverbial gun barrel, he went on to beat Sunny Morn by a neck in the splendid time for a grass track of 2min 36 S-ssec. The winner received a great reception on returning to the saddling paddock. \ An impressive performance was also given by Graham Direct, who led in the Oamaru' Jubilee Handicap from Start to finish, and drew away from the field in the last 50 yards. The totalisator handled £23,074, as against £19,040 10s for the corresponding clay last year. The Gore spring meeting was opened in beautiful weather. The attendance was good, the gates being up nearly £IOO. The truck was in great racing order, and the sport was good. Mr G. Gieseler's efforts as starter could have been improved on. Shock and/Red Terror were chopped out at the start of the Pukerau High-weight Handicap, Braw Lad, Golden Lap, and Horn's Reef leading out of the straight from Little Pal. There was little change in the running two furlongs and a-half from home, where Little Pal fell. Once in the straight, Golden Lap forged ahead and held to it to win nicely from Horn's Reef, who finished better than Braw Lad. Shock was next, and then Sungem. The winner scored nicely to give R. M'Nay his first win for a very long time. Shock was unlucky, but Horn's Reef and Braw Lad were beaten on their merits after making the pace. The Waimea Hack Handicap was a great race, and a hot favourite in Dissemble was well beaten. The start was not good. Bay Duke and Dissemble quickly showed out and opened up a gap from Gold Fox and Amelita. The leaders were four lengths clear at the turn, with Gold Fox, Amelita, and Island Linnet next. A furlong from home it was a thrilling contest, six horses being in line. A close finish saw Bay Duke get the decision by a neck from Amelita, with Island Linnet a nose away, a neck ahead of Gold Fox. Then Song Boy and Dis. semble. From a good start in the Spring Handicap the field ran in line for some distance. Then Osculate, Stectqn, and Milford showed out around the turn. Kemal Pasha got into a lot of trouble and dropped right back. Down the back stretch Steeton just led Osculate, and then came Amv Johnson and Milford, with Kemal Pasha moving up. The lastnamed joined the leaders entering the straight, and it looked like being a good race home, but Amy Johnson shot out and went away to score easily by nearly three lengths from Dodge. Kemal Pasha was right up, and then Milford, Steeton, and Cough. It was no race over the final stages, and the Wingatui mare scored very nicely. Dodge finished very strongly to run second, and his was a good performance. He was in the rear for most of the journey. Kemal Pasha was very unlucky, and should soon make amends. Milford was not good, enough, and Steeton failed to run on. Several of those in the Labour Day Trot lost their chances at the start, and Worthy Claire led out from Sea Mark, Master Garry, Autogo, and Walter Gay. The order was the same at the stand, with Harold Guy next. In the

Big Author went off at a gallop, and Rongomai, Frank Mac, Tricliff, and Sage King were the smartest away. Racing into the back stretch Frank Mac_ had taken charge, with Rongomai, Tricliff, Sage King, Greenmantle, Big Author, and Full Hand next. Wild Dreams, breaking, was well back. At the far turn Frank Mac was still in the lead, then coming Big Author, who had moved up fast, Rongomai, Greenmantle, Tricliff, and Sage King. Racing past the stand for the final circuit Frank Mac and Big Author were together, with Noble Prince, Greenmantle, and Rongomai handy. Big Author was in front before the far turn was reached, then coming Rongomai, Greenmantle, Sage King, Noble Prince, and Tricliff. Big Author led Greenmantle, Rongomai, Noble Prince, and Sage King into the straight, and came on to win well by a length from Rongomai, who was a length in front of Sage King. Then came Full Hand and Tricliff. Times: 3min 22 2-ssec, 3min 24 3-ssec, 3min 24 4-ssee. WESTON HANDICAP, Of 300sovs; second 40sovs and third 25sovs from the stake. Class 2.44 or better. Sunny Morn led out from War BuOy, Wrackler, Blue Mountain, and Tempest, and the two scratch horses also went out very fast. Racing past the stand with four furlongs covered Sunny Morn was just clear of War Buoy, and then came Blue Mountain and Wrackler, the field having closed up. Goiiw; down the back Sunnv Morn was still in the lead and' lvaa followed by War Buoy, Blue Mountain, Great Logan, Tempest, Evicus, Indianapolis, and Roi l'Or. Sunny Morn held his place round the far turn and into the straight, with War Buoy almost on terms, the pair being just in front of Blue Mountain and Wrackler. At this stare. Indianapolis and Roi l'Or were together last, about five lengths from the leader. Indianapolis then put in a thrilling run on the outside and was level with Hie leaders 50 yards from the post. Holmes then gave him a flick with his whip and the champion went on to win by a neck from Sunny Morn, who was a similar distance in front of War Buoy. Evicus was another neck away fourth, and then came Wrackler and Blue Mountain. Times: 2min 36 3-ssec, 2miu 41 4-ssec, 2min 42sec. ludianopolis's time was one-fifth of a second .outside the New Zealand record of 2min 36 2-ssec for a mile and a-quar-ter, held jointly by Harold Logan and Roi l'Or. Mocaet was the first out, with Somerby and Homeward next, and that was the order of the leaders as they passed the post at the end of two furlongs, then coming Willow Wave and Prairie King in a close-running field. Mocast carried on the running from Somerby and Homeward racing through the back stretch, where Kingcraft made a forward move. Mocast, Somerby, Homeward, and Kingcraft came into the straight in a bunch, and Kingcraft held to it best to win by a length and a-half from Willow Wave. Taxpayer was three lengths further back, third, and Mocast was next in a strung-out field. Times: 2min 8 2-s.see, 2min lOscc, 2inin 9 3-sscc.

back stretch Belle Grattan travelled fast on the outer and got handy to the leaders. Worthy Claire had enough across the top, and once in line Bell Grattan forged to the front in a slogging finish to beat Seamark by a length and a-halt. Harold Guy was a similar distance away. The winner scored an impressive win as she lost ground early. . _ A very poor start for the Novice Handicap saw Obligement. Sunny Jean. Wild Career, and Corban have their chances ruined. Great Empire and Wall Street hopped out best from Restrain, and the/ leil Palarino down the back with Waipounamu next. There was no change in the running, and Great Empire held on to beat Palarino comfortably by two lengths. Wall Street was third, and then Wild Career, who put iu a great finish, followed by Tautau Maid and Sunny Jean. It looked as if the last-named would-have made it interesting had she got away, but the winner scored nicely. Another bad start in the Stewards Handicap saw Broken Rule, Red Boa. and Enwood have no chance. Cherry Queen, Viking, and Last Link were best away from Great Shot, and they raced tbis way to the straight. Viking soon disposed oi the leader and beat Last Link by three lengths.' Cherry Queen was a head away, and then Great Shot and Hula Belle. Viking won very nicely and was superior on the day. . . . Sun Worshipper had an easy win in tne Mataura Trot. He was first away from Happiness and Single Lee. and passing the stand the order was the same. Chevalier, Gold Valley, and Blue Spark were next. Happiness ran up to Sua Worshipper, but once in line the latter was always an easy winner to beat him by three lengths. Eighteen Carat was three-quarters of a length away, and then Chevalier and Radiant Gold. The winner is a bit better than useful. Daring Deed, Young Sentinel, and Horn's Reef were first away in the Charlton Hack Handicap, and they led into the back from Mayam and Braw Lad.' Daring Deed was clear down the back stretch, but Horn's Reef joined him on the turn. These two were first to turn for home from Young Sentinel and Mayam. Braw Lad and June the Third were next. A fighting finish saw Horn's Reef just get the verdict by a head. Ygung Sentinel was a length and a-half away. June the Third was right up. and thefi'Mayam. It was a good race all the way. The winner showed an improvement on his effort i& the High-weight Handicap. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY (Per United Press Association) GORE, October 28.
