MOTOR TRIALS
LABOUR DAY FIXTURE HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL OUTING The annual Labour Day trials of the Automobile Association of Otago were held during the week-end under excellent weather conditions. There were nine motor cycles and ten cars in the contest, which was held over the same route as last year—Dunedin to Pembroke and return. The motor cycles were sent away from the association's rooms in Moray place at 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, the cars following at one-minute intervals. Main checks were taken at Lawrence, Roxburgh and Cromwell, and the first man reached Pembroke at 10.19 p.m. Speedometer, braking, speed judging and parking tests were conducted at Wanaka and the return journey was commenced at 8 a.m. yesterday, a special test being held for motor cyclists at the Cardrona, where the riders were required to drive their machines up the stream. The home trip was made by way of Hawea, Tarras, Clyde, Alexandra, Ranfurly and Middlemarch, main checks being taken at these points. In addition, there were secret checks at intervals. A stop was made on the run for the purpose of holding a stopping and restarting test on Blacks Hill, near Ophir. "The weather was excellent throughout," said the secretary of the Automobile Association (Mr W. P. Sutton) last evening, " and the roads were found to be in good order for the whole of the journey. • The full distance covered by each competitor was 392.3 miles, and the total mileage for the whole party, including officials, amounted to just on 12,000. It is estimated that the amount expended on the trials, including petrol, was about £200." The results of the contest, on which several cups and medals depend, will not be known for a day or two, and will be announced when available.
